I am waiting for more Cutes to answer this post. I too need practice hooping multple times for a design. I understand the print and place method when you print all your designs, place them and then mark the centers. I think I want the devise that puts a laser light on the center point, however mine is more of a staying on grain problem.
My machine - Husqvarna Ruby has a very helpful attribute called design positioning which makes it very easy to find the centre of a design as most machines appear to go to where it intends to start stitching and you can check for the centre before it starts to make sure you are on target.
I put the same question in the Q & A section and a couple of the cuties gave me links to videos at youtube which I watched and found helpful. It is worth checking them out.
Having a Ruby makes multi-positioning a piec of cake. Have a look in your owner's manual. Chapter 8.3 in the manual for the Ruby de Luxe (I don't have my Ruby or its manual where I am now, so I had a look at the HV-website). They use a very simple redwork (black in this case) design as an example. It works like magic, even rotates automatically once you click on two connecting points.
Have a look at the project page of Emblibrary - they have tutorials on any problem you may think of - see link.
There is also a nice one on combining designs at www.kodesign.de.
In both cases templates are used, but to print those you need embroidery software.
