I have done it!

It took me nearly a year but I have cleaned up all my embroidery files!!!!
It still contains over 96.000 files but I have seen them all! and thousands and thousands more which I just deleted as the digitising was so bad!

Good for you. When I first came to the Cute site and was DL everything in sight, a cutie told me to get organised from the start. Best piece of advice ever. I still go through my files and delete things I know I will not use. Hugs Sarah.

Congratulations on your organization!! Now maybe I will get motivated to try and do something with my files. I quit downloading the freebies a long time ago and I always open my zip files and just save what is in my machine format so that will save me some time. You should be very proud of your accomplishment. Hugs, mary

Congratulations on cleaning up your embroidery files. I also am in the progress of doing it and have gone from a to Easter, in alphabetical order. As I go along if I don't like a design, it is deleted as are all of the formats that I can't use. I also am not downloading a file if I can't unzip and clean it up right then and there. Hopefully this will make it easier in the long run. Again congratulations.

When you cleaned up your files did you unzip everything and delete the formats you won't be using? Did you resort by designer or subject? I am in the process of cleaning mine up and boy is it overwhelming at times. I find the designs are of little use to me zipped when I am searching for something in particular. Time consuming but also rewarding.

I do it by subject. although I have most of my designs labeled where they came from (At least the later ones) Everything is unzipped and only in the format I use. I have a folder with all the zipped designs on a back up disk just in case.... I also have everything backed up on an external drive.

Oh I'm jealous! Well done. I think It will take me that long also. I think it was the excitement of all the freebies that did me in at the beginning as well. I seem to be forever sorting but I have a problem deleting. I always think I might need that one day. You give me hope that some day I will be organised with my filing. Thankyou :)

What I find the hardest Angelique is trying to remember what I have actually bought. Sometimes I go to a site and think ooh that's nice and buy it only to find I've already got it. This is of course sites that don't let you know that you've already bought it.

lique by lique 07 May 2013

I now adays do not buy much any more but do all my own digitising. I also have given up on freebies although I could not resist the cute baby font!

Oh my goodness. That is a task I don't think I ever want to start because I know I would never finish. What is your secret? I always tell a friend when she starts to embroidery to go to various sites but, I have cautioned her that some free designs are just not worth saving. I agree with one of the other cuties comments - taste do change. Congratulations on your job.

Yes, when we start embroidering, it is very easy to get the free ones and not to know what is good and what is not good. So well done to you.

I have a spare bedroom. Could you come over and clean out my embroidery files? :)
Sadly I wouldn't even know if something is badly digitized.

There you go! Now, get in the habit to "clean up" at least once a week. Every Sunday evening I back up all my purchased designs, if I didn't do it as soon as purchased. Most of the time I back up as soon as purchased. I don't do freebies so it is faster for me to accomplish that job. Years ago I cleaned out my designs and so many freebies were deleted as they were just "ugly and bad". Plus, my taste in designs changed..Hugs....Carol

I also have given up on most freebies ( sometimes it is hard to resist) But it was the random downloading in the beginning that did me in.

graceandham by graceandham 08 May 2013

So we need to promote the idea of organized freebie downloading...
