I am so proud of myself! Last week the needle broke on my Bro.ULT and I used pliers to remove it (I've always had trouble removing the needle). Anyway, then I could not get a new needle to stay in--kept dropping out. I took to local Viking store for simple repair (my Bro. man is 100+ mi away). Not so simple--he said a piece was missing. I pooh-poohed that. was sure nothing was missing. But first, before the long drive, I had another look. Lo & behold ''something'' lying on the thread stand that looked like a nail with the head cut off. Slipped it into the little screw tube--point towards screw, and !VOILA! my machine was back in business. Did anyone know there was such behind the needle screw? I am soooo happy! I have dislocated my shoulder from patting ME on the back--ha ha. And in case Dennis reads this, my hubby leaves most repairs to me.

While I think of it: My machine came to me with with thread wrapped around the bronze bearing. I don't have the colour that was wrapped up in there so that's how I knew. Have you done the "fix" to block the hole on the bronze bearing? I can't even see the hole to find something to put in it (as suggested on Ann's site). Just wondering :) xXx

I have not--neither can I find a place to attach on the 2003, nor the 2002...and it is a pain having to clean the bronze bearing. I took mine to shop once because I could not get all the thread--I stood & watched my 'man' , so I now know some secrets. Re the needle--take the screw completely out, touch a strong magnet to the end of the little tube and it will pull the "nail" out. Perhaps it was replaced wrong way out. The point goes against the end of the screw & flat against needle. LUCK!

Well done :) .. I have a 2001 and wonder if I have the same part behind the needle screw. I'm tempted to take it apart to have a look. In my case, hand screwing the needle in doesn't cut it for holding the needle. The first few times I used the machine the needle would just fall out because it seems to rattle itself out during embroidery. (Interestingly, the machine stops for all sorts of reasons/problems but didn't notice the needle had fallen out. I never leave its side while it's on so I stopped it as soon as I saw the needle fall out.) The fix was to tighten with a screwdriver. pfft too simple lol.

I love Ann's ULT site for learning about the ULT. She's a lovely (and patient!) woman too :) xXx

debi, this is not my first repair! I tend to jump right in most of the time. I've adjusted the "bobbin low" warning (it seemed to start before the bobbin had used a foot of thread, I've attacked the bronze bearing & thread tangles 2 or 3 times...I have d/l'd the repair manual but the computer parts are verbotin!

Well done. I use a Singer 221 and it's very FUSSY as to how a new needle is placed. But as a safety precaution on any other sewing embroidery machine before I remove needle I always take a piece of felt(keep it next to machine) to prevent needle from dropping into machine. This new machines are too expensive and a broken needle will damage the machine.Shame on the repairman He knew better!!

Well..................what can I say? I think you are awesome Awesome1. You have every right to be proud of your achievements. I mean.........you managed to drive to your local Viking store (having remembered to put the machine in the car) without causing any accidents (I presume that there was no reversing involved)...........you stood up to the nasty Viking man who thought that there was an opportunity to make himself a lot of money.................you managed to spot an essential part of the machine that was there all the time.........and you managed to re-insert the 'nail with its head cut off' (a technical term presumably gleaned from the Brother manual!). Seriously though, well done.

So, everyone, let's hear it for the awesome Awesome1.......................

P.S. Have you told your Hubby how much it cost in fuel to fix your machine yourself.........tsk, tsk.
P.P.S. I read every word that you post!!!!!!

Dennis, I think it is time for you to go and find a lily pad.

well said, Sue!

The Viking man is nearby, and in a pinch....but he tickled me. I told him The screw wouldn't tighten to hold the needle in and it kept falling out. HE SAID "I hand tightened the screw and the needle fell out". Duh. I heard that somewhere before. He kept insisting there was a part missing (but he didn't know what & suggested my Bro man would have to order the entire part for the machine). That is primarily why I am so proud of meself. I saved a bundle in repairs.

I think that you did very well and as I said, have every reason to be proud (albeit mixed in with a little humour) but as suggested by Sue, I shall now hop it.

Ohhhh Dennis - you are treading on very thin ice - especially about the driving. LOL.

dennis999 by dennis999 10 Jul 2013

So sorry Nanna Airyfairy but in my defence, I had to tread on the thin ice in order to get to the lily pad that Mrs Suedewsbury sent me to. Anyway, I'm keeping my head below the battlements for now......lol
