Thank you!!! I am going to try something on a onsie for my grandsons first birthday!
AuntAnnie advised Embroidery Library - they have great tutorials.
I applique the same way as a fill design. No show mesh as the stabilizer (layers as the density of the design dictates). I use the stickie method (stick to the item, not hooped). I prepare my fabric to be used in the applique with a fusible web (I personally like Heat And Bond Lite) so it gives it a bit more "bite" and you can iron it down at the end so it stays laying flat. For not cutting the fabric I use a pair of tiny curved end scissors (mine are Fiskars from Joann). That way as you cut the applique fabric after doing the tack-down you can get close but the tips point away so you don't cut the bottom fabric (in this case the t-shirt). Applique is fun - give it a try on some scrap fabric and you will have the hang of it in no time.
I use an iron-on fusible mesh on all stretch fabrics along with a ball point needle. The mesh can be reheated for easy cutting away. Try redwork or other designs that are more open (containing less fill stitching).
Embroidery Library has numerous tutorials for embroidering on T-shirts.
