nothing to do with sewing but help for disabled tip

Hubby has been diagnosed with carpel tunnel in his right wrist and has had a problem holding his knife. With this in mind i checked out the cost of purchasing a set of specialy adapted cutlery for him.
TILL I SAW THE PRICE.
Even on E Bay the cost was over £20.00 for a set.
Now i had to put my thinking cap on and see what i could come up with, I had seen some at the respite home that hubby goes to once a week and noted what the handles were made from.FOAM.. Well i have some of that already that is used to lag pipes. it is grey with a slit down it for ease of opening,
Light goes on in brain cell and i set to work.
select the knife fork and spoon you are going to use, with a sharp knife cut lengths off the pipe lagging tube to cover the handles, less about half inch.
get some dux tape ready you may need to cut of some of the foam along the length of the tube to make it fold around the handle nice and tight,
rip a length about half inch wide and six inch long from the roll and start to wrap it around the tape very tightly to secure the handle. rip of more lengths as you need them, make sure its tight enough to hold the foam firmly enough. take a short length of tape and cover over the top of the foam so that the handle does not protude then go around the roll again with more tape.
do this with the other utensils. You have now saved yourself £20.00 and any one will now be able to grip their cutlery with out pain .
How can companies warrant the cost of disabled items.
please feel free to pass on this way of overcoming a problem.

Hi Annie, I've had both my wrists done. The first was done 30 years ago and the doctor said then it would last about 20 years. I need to get it done again. The left hand was done about 14 years ago and that gives me some grief through the night with tingles. Oh! well, I'll have to have them done again sooner or later. I think having larger handles on things would help my Mum as she has dreadful arthritis. Love Chris

sounds great & if you don't like the look of the silver duc tape, use some of the fancy designs that they have or make a cover for the handles, like for handle covers for pots & pants.

Mine was so bad I couldn't do anything but hold it in my left hand...I had the operation done...1/2 inch at the base of palm...best thing and relief I ever did. but the company I work for stuck me in the same circumstances of continuous cutting and it flared the area again...using my left hand again for computer and other things trying to calm it down right now....

shame on your company for doing that. Hope your wrist gets back to normal.

I have got hubby a brace for his hand off E Bay to stop him bending his wrist and to help settle the nerve down a bit,
Hopefully that and some anti inflamatory tablets will give him some relief

Dear Annie - you always come up with the answer. Well done. Is your husband going to have an op. I have had both wrists done (some years ago) and have never had a problem since. Sarah.
