I know absolutley nothing about repairs but It seem like if the thread is going along ok to the tension discs the problem must be from there on. Have you tried a different weight or type of thread just to see if the one yo are using does not like your machine?
Re anangel's comments, I was taught , "problem on top, trouble is below,Problem on bottom, trouble is on top. This has held true for minor knots, nests, bad stitches, etc.
Be sure that the thread is pulling from the bobbin in the right direction. I had thread nests under the presser foot and found I had the bobbin inserted incorrectly. Also, be sure to hold the presser foot all the way up, when threading the machine, to get the thread through the guides correctly. Usually upper thread tension is off, when thread nests occur under the presser foot. But, you say you have tried everything, so possibly these things, too. Hope your issue is resolved soon.
Hugs, Angel
Hi I also have a 780D. When you say "and using a thread stand" are you using the thread stand that lays sideways on the machine itself? or are you using a thread stand that stands up on the table and feeding the machine that way? Also when you speak of the tension discs are you talking about where number 1 loops around to 2 or where 3, 4 and 5 loop? Just tryin to get a better picture.

I am sure with all the trouble you have had -- that you have already tried changing the bobbin itself. I had (a while back) issues with the bobbin winder making the bobbin thread tight then loose then tight again. It caused tension like issues.
Tried that--I have heard that prewound bobbins---though somewhat expensive---may be a wise choice----think my problem may partly be from last "TECH" who messed with the bobbin case with her little screw driver and after reading from some Cuties---the screw adjustments will slip once the original settings have been messed with---so we will keep trying to diagnose until I get an answer from Brother and a trip to another repair facility in about a month or so---Thank you and God bless you!!
If your machine ever worked as it was supposed to work...You might try ordering a new bobbin case. I think a new bobbin case is only about $25 USD If that is the issue, it seems it would be cheaper to fix it that way. I do hope you get it fixed soon!
Tension/guides on my machine are acting up too, so frustrating. It embroiders but looks awful. I adjust the tension up or down with no change, thread, rethread, rerethread, change colors and brands of thread and it's just garbage. I've stitched out a few things over the last 2 weeks that were perfectly stitched, now all of a sudden it's a hot mess. Both of the shops that repair are very far away and behind 3 weeks. I've tried all of the cleaning tips...flossing the guides, rubbing alcohol on a piece of fabric to clean the tension discs, cleaning out the bobbin area but it must be deeper than that. Good luck to you :-)
Thanks for the PITY and allowing me to vent---Hubby is SICK AND TIRED of listening---I luckily have 2 4x4 machines---but I like the 5x7----just determined enough to keep on trying!!!!!I You sound SEW much like me---you have tried EVERYTHING----nothing is consistent!!!!God bless us both----and may our issues get fixed!!!!
Yes! I keep thinking "this will do it, it should work now" but no. Luckily I don't have any projects that must be done so the embroidery machine can pout and be mad at me. The sewing machine and serger are still my friends...at least for today.
I am new this year to embroidery!!!! have already had all these probs, i m now using thread nets so thread does not come off spools too fast! other things to do are change your fabric n needle. what were you using thread n fabric wise when things went well. i try to write these things down.
