I try to knit and crochet to use up of my stash of yarn. These are two crochet blankets, one from remnants of 4-ply woollen yarns (picture 1), the other from leftovers of socks I knitted some time ago- I liked the variegated and self-striping yarns but had lots of other remnants as well. It was amazing how well the boring yarns used for men's socks, the beige, grey and marine, did between the other rather wild colours.

It did not even make a dent in my stash, I'll have to start some serious knitting - and keep at it all winter to see any results!

They are very nice. I like to crochet but haven't done it in a while. It was a great project to use while traveling since my husband always did the driving.

Oh, Martine, nostalgia time seeing your work! My Mom would do the same thing, and I still have one of her Granny Square little afghans on the couch. She taught me to crochet when I was a child, I can't tell you how many hankies I crocheted edging for and loved it. She showed me what to do, how to do the stitches, and I could easily follow what had already been done, but I never learned to read a pattern! It's so odd, maybe some form of dyslexia, because I do know the abbreviations for the stitches, and mostly remember what they are and how to do them (sometimes I peek at my cheat-chart), but when I try to follow the pattern, it's like reading a foreign language, and I almost have to learn the abbreviations all over again each row. Since my memory is really getting shaky, it's maddening. I remember Mom doing those Granny squares even after her eyesight was really bad, because her fingers knew them by heart! Beautiful work, and thanks for the memories, hugs, Marji

I love the huge granny square rug and it's just like the ones that I make. Recently, DHDon shared a hospital room with a really grouchy, independent, now living alone old man whose legs and feet needed regular massage because they were so cold. I had not long before finished a 'man rug', with a plain edging and no girl colours, so I took it in and put it onto his knees. He used that rug for all kinds of comfort - head, back, legs - until he overcame his embarrassment and found out how warm it was. I'm hoping he took it home and uses it daily where he can be warm in the privacy of his own place and not worry about looking old and needing a knee rug.

Also, you, like me, use up small oddments of yarn and they can barely be detected when crocheted with the longer balls.

I love your socks, too. I'm not sure I want to use the remnants of my 4ply yarns in a knee rug but yours looks wonderful.

You must have a lot LOT of scrap. The aghans look amazing. I wish I could crochet, for some reasons a few fingers go numb on my left hand when I try. I also need large custom socks for hubby and have no way to get them for him.

Thank you. Not just scraps! The little finger of my right hand goes numb when knitting, silly isn't it.

I love those leftovers put together like you have done. If you have little ones around they are wonderful to use for naps and just playing under. Kids love to build forts etc and this type of cover is just the right thing for them. It's fun to try to remember what each color was used to make.

Thanks. There are too many cupboards filled to overflowing not to do something with all my yarns and sewing materials. Old jeans, discarded shirts (only cuffs and collars worn down), and threads for bobbin lace making - now that is something that takes ages. I hope my eyesight will be good enough when I am in an old-people's home - that when I may start on those!

I love the feel of woollen yarns. I have a stash of cones for the knitting machine I used in the 80s. I don't like knitting large items with very thin yarn, it takes ages, so I did some of the crocheting with two threads together to get faster results.

I love them all. I never picked up the knitting and crocheting bug when younger and now regret not knowing how to do much in either one.

I learned at a young age, but I don't crochet that often, I prefer knitting. But these afghans are fun to do. And the remnants are all from knitting projects.

Well done you. I'm afraid my yarn stash has grown recently but I haven't had the time to use any as I have a hand embroidery project which must be finished in time for a birthday.

Mine has too. My daughter could not resist buying 63(!) balls at a factory outlet in Norway (as many as could be fitted in a rather large bag for 100 NOK - about £10). I knitted one sweater for my granddaughter and used only five, so 58 to go and to make matters worse I recently saw an offer I couldn't resist either :)

spendlove by spendlove 23 Sep 2013

That sounds a great offer!

marjialexa by marjialexa 05 Oct 2013

Oh, don't you just love it when they make you an offer you can't refuse, hee hee hee. Happened to me at WalMart with fabric the other day, I just needed a little piece for a 12" background for a wallhanging. Quite by accident, I found a fabric perfect for the hanging, not a design I would ever have looked at otherwise. Then I found out it was "clearance" for only $2.50/yd. Then, to make matters worse, the girl from the electronics department was cutting fabric, and she must never have seen a yardstick in her life, because her "yard" is the length of the whole table, not of the yard measure. So, as long as I was getting 45" yards, and the fabric was cheap, I got 2 of her "yards". Then, to top it all off, the bar code reader was broken, so they were writing prices by hand, and she had already thrown the bolt into the bin, and she only charged me $1.50/yd for it! Oh, bless me, but I'm going to fabric hell just because of WalMart, how many times they do that and I just keep my mouth firmly shut. So now I have nearly 3 yards (she gave me extra because the original cut was crooked) of fabric that I needed 12" of, that is such zany fabric I have NO clue what I'll do with it. But what a bargain!!! Hee hee hee Just love it when the little dudes from electronics have to cut material, they are so clueless. Hugs, Marji
