I don't know if this will help, but last week I spent 3 days with my Brother 1500D. I did everything, ran cord through top, floss, even bought new bobbin case. somewhere I found someone that said, take a 2 inch strip of material and run it through the top tension, my machine works now. It wasn't catching the top thread, and what a mess I had.
Did it ever work right, maybe that is why it was given away
YES, It worked perfectly when I worked with her. She stitched a few names and then it just started not picking up the bobbin thread. I did everything, LITERALLY, I have been doing this stuff for 10 years, and it will NOT pick up the bobbin thread. It looks to me like the timing may have gotten out of whack--the needle seems to be hitting the bobbin case at the wrong place and time---I think it is time for a trip to MY REPAIRMAN!!!!!!!!He saved my 780D. Thank you, Mery CHRISTmas, and God bless you.
There is a word for that. I sent a machine in with that problem, it came back with it, and I had to have the salesperson write it up and take it back in. They did fix it that time.
Just guessing as I have not looked it up online -- have you made sure the bobbin is inserted the right way?
I will be working with her tomorrow to see if we can figure out what is going on----the bobbin was what I was thinking, too...I will keep y'all posted as we PLAY with her NEWly inherited machine---very non-technical machine compared to the ones made now--thank you and Merry CHRISTmas!!
Merry CHRISTmas to you as well!
Usual reasons for not picking up the bobbin thread are that the needle is in backwards (backwards needles don't pick up bobbin threads reliably, and skip stitches), or the needle isn't correctly seated in the needle clamp, or the machine is a little bit out of time.
If you are feeling like fixing it yourself (I would only consider this on my very old regular machine) You could check the link. It may also show you what to look for to see if it needs repair.

Bless you for helping your friend!
Also, if it has a thread cutter -- check to make sure it isn't bent and cutting the bobbin tail too short. Some older machines need help getting the bobbin thread to make the first connection.
My newish Ruby has the same problem when cutting the thread: The bobbin thread is cut just a bit to short and I have pull it out a bit further to get the next colour stitched.
