I do leather all the time on my Barudan 15 needle. I slow the machine down and use extra stabilizer in the back. I DO not use leather needles and i have never had one design "cut" around it. I have done some very dense designs on leather handbags and medicine bags that i sell at pow wows. Have made over 150 bags and never had one ruined.
thanks,
I will also be using my 15 needle machine and just wondered if I needed to change my needles, (big job). Wondered as well on design stitch density, would not want to be limited to RW or simple design (I don't like doing simple lol).
thanks for your insight, very helpful
oh i have done a few bw designs anything else was to thick and i always broke a needle .Even a heavy one .So now i just do red work with no problem hugs carolyn
I did some very simple stitching on leather on the suede side with polyester thread and sharp needle the first year that I had my machine and made simple coasters for my sons-in-law. The leather was from a scrap bag of cuts and I used some circles that were not at all floppy. I added no other fabric. They are still being used!

Design must be light stitch, otherwise you're just creating a tear line for the leather.
Anita Goodesign had some good instructions on leather in a fashion design collection. I think it was called "Glamour Rocks".
