Why is London called the Big Smoke? Pollution? Does it refer to the war hit London?
Dennis may be able to answer that one better than me, but I remember in the fifties London being filled with dense smog (smoke and fog) and you not being able to see more than a few feet in front of you. So I think it may come from that.

Thanks Gerryvb, its very London in Walthamstow, with everyone rushing everywhere, unlike here in the village where everyone speaks to one another when you're out. Give me the slower pace of life every time. Jo
