Hubby is retiring in April and we have sold our house in Somerset and relocating to East Yorkshire. Everything has to go into store, as our new property will not be ready until the end of May. Any tips on the best way to pack my machines, fabrics and the thousand and one other things that go with this hobby! Thanks Suet.

We just moved 6 months ago and I used my fabric to pack things with instead of having to purchase packing materials.

A general moving comment - If movers will be handling your things, only label boxes with a number or letter and then you have two copies of the master list as to which boxes go to which rooms as well as the contents of the box. My movers stole 3 boxes - all of tools - which were identifiable by being overly heavy. Then they tried to say my inventory was wrong or we didn't check three off as they loaded them into the house. Keep control of your most valuable (jewelry, etc). and most heirloom (family pics, footstool grandfather made) items and hope for the best. I agree about storing in plastic. Do you have the wonderful oversize 2xx and 3xxx Ziploc bags available there? Happy Moving!

Dennis is correct. Be sure the storage facility is heated or air conditioned. Insurance Is good to have in case of anything going wrong. I put the contents of each drawer into a plastic bag and label it as to which drawer it goes back into. I try to keep my fabric in order like all blue cotton together, but packers never keep it in order. It is good to put anything you do not want to get wet into sturdy plastic bags. Put as much of your thread and stabilizer into sturdy plastic bags, especially WSS as you can, to keep that safe. Do the same thing with any templates, patterns, manuals. And do take pictures of your room now so you can put as many things back in the same place as possible. Yes, I have moved my sewing room and its contents a few times. You have my support in this endeavor. I am sure other Cuties will also have ideas. And my room will be packed up and moved for hopefully, the last time in a few months.

From personal experience, I would say the first thing is to thoroughly check out the facilities used by the storage company. Don't just rely upon perceived membership of trade associations or take for granted that the company is insured against the loss of or damage to your goods. Unless you are totally confident in the company, try to have the more delicate items like electronic equipment stored where you know it will be safeguarded against damp/condensation. A good storage company will have air conditioned facilities or will further protect delicate goods using moisture-absorbing packaging.

Thanks for that, Dennis. I never thought of things getting damp, though living in Somerset this winter, I've had a good reminder all around me! Each individual container will be covered for insurance. The warehouse they are going in is heated, but there is no air con. Our things should only be in store for about 8 weeks, and being in the UK I hope humity should n't be a problem. I will wrap everything in plastic bags before boxing it though. Thanks Suet

Take care - you will not be far from our group of Cuties who meet up for lunch now and again. You may get sucked in!
Whereabouts in EY?

A village called Hutton Cranswick, which is about 7 miles north of Beverley.

Bring them round to me. ho ho ho .
Seriously now. if you know some one near that would at least have your machines for you or if not have you got the boxes they came in that would be best.
Hugs Pam.

I have already taken one machine to my sister in laws for safe keeping, but next time we go north the car will be full of all the other things that we do not want to store, like clothes and a few boxes of wine!

Suet I would drink the wine so you have room to store the machines. seriously good luck with the move and enjoy Yorkshire. The county of my youth ;)

Having spent the last few weeks selling and then buying a property there have been several times I have been tempted to drink the wine!
