How can you tell if your scissors are of quality to be able to have them professionally sharpened? 1 pair of my "fabric scissors" is stopping mid cut. I also inherited a pair that I believe to be of sufficient quality to come back to fabric. My family has been trained not to use my scissors. I just need more and better scissors, and I have lots. I want to make a special carrier thing for my rotary cutters, that will also hook or hang. A roll up will work except for the circle cutter. Yep I must say I am a collector of tools! To answer your question, I have too many in too many places to count. I totally enjoyed reading this post. Thanks
This has been a lovely post. I always enjoy a good laugh and the company of Cuties everywhere! It often feels as if we live right next door...
About the scissors -- I would have to ask my shop if they could or should be sharpened.
I did come up with an alternative to Scissor Sisters as a generic title for all you scissorholics....................but decided to invoke the 5th. Amendment.................
I have to say that the response to this question has been truly magnificent and Mommy Rescuer's young son is to be congratulated for his inquiring mind. Obviously a chip off the old block (not that I am suggesting that his Mommy is old............................or a block). Anyway, well done young man.
I confess that I am staggered by the admission that you possess so many and such a vast range of cutting, slicing and snipping devices, to the point that I am tempted to suggest that you need to get out more. However, this may not be such a good idea since it is clear from the admission of some of you that this would only result in the purchase of even more scissors. I have this mental picture of Mommy Rescuer standing outside her local scissor emporium, drooling over the display before her!
The admissions are such that I believe that there would be good business for someone to set up a specialist Scissor-Dependant Counselling Service. I mean to say, we have:
dianap, openly admitting to having a scissor fetish; hightechgrammy's admission to being 'out of the closet' AND keeping scissors in her car; sandyqueen apparently considering opening a clip joint; hagridsmom admitting to a secret squirrel stash of unopened scissors; Janus trying to re-write the medical journals with her version of OCD (Overflowing Cutting Devices); bevintex owning up to keeping screwdrivers on her boat, and Mrs. jrob posting pictures of her invention of the chastity scissor device...................................and then there is poor little Yoriko who only has 2 pairs of scissors (the poor girl will be mortified).
For me......................well, I shall just think of you as my Scissor Sisters (until I can come up with something more appropriate!).
I think tomorrow is a great day to shop for a new pair of scissors! Thanks Dennis for a lovely idea! I shall be sure to mention to my husband that it was your idea. LOL
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!! I am only a fleaweight. You're a bully, you are..............................lol
My son belongs to an online group of people who collect flashlights. Their collections are absolutely amazing. They arrange their flashlights and take pictures to show their collections. That would be fun to do here. My scissors photo would have to be done with a high def camera to get them all in. My family has traditions. We tend to gift collectibles. I receive scissors and knives from my crew. My collection spans from ultra small (about 2" long) to huge (about 17" long). And I have no idea how many I have. :) Great question, fun answers!!
I lost a pair of scissors, a nice pair of black Gingher 8 inch shears, and I actually replaced them. But I still grieve for them, and everytime I open up an old box, or an old project, I keep looking for them, hoping I'll find them.... Boo Hoo Have you ever lost a favorite pair?
The scissors my boys bought for me were Ginghers -- I love them! (The scissors AND the boys!)
I am ashamed to say , but each is special to me and my only advise is never let some one sharpen them that is not a pro. I have had some Gingher duckbill applique that are 30 years old and never sharpened. I love these. I use them every day in one way or another. I also love Famore Cutlery...www.famorecutlery.com i buy these at the quilt and sew shows and he offers sharpening. I have never had any of his products sharpened. This company is out od Brooksville Fl
I only take mine to my small/local fabric shop. They are a dealer for Babylock and guarantee their scissor sharpening. That is a relief!
For some strange reason my husband no longer suggests I go to the quilt shows...one wonders why? LOL
I have six pairs. But I keep eying more. LOL
I have been looking now for new ones since this post -- I don't think this is what my son had in mind when he asked. LOL
If anyone had asked me this question a couple of years ago, I would have only counted my dressmaking scissors. As I don't really class the others as that "scissors", but now I do machine embroidery...
Funny thing is, I was looking at the drawer that holds my dressmaking scissors and thinking they need to be moved to a larger environment.
I have pinking shears from 1973 when I was married and bought this fabulously expensive and luxurious tool. For years I wouldn't buy dressmaking shears as they kept going missing (3 kids and a DH, all light fingered). Finally broke down and bought a lovely pair of shears while doing a course - they are labelled still and the course was over 20 years ago. Then the ScissorMan had a special at one of the shows and I bought a dark pink pair of shears for a measly $5. Made him explain why such good scissors were a 1/6 the price of regular shears. Since then, there has been an explosion in the scissor population. I knit, crochet, hand embroider, paint, paper craft, etc, etc and there are scissors of every type somewhere in my house. When I wouldn't buy shears, I used to buy small $2 scissors from Woolworths that fit into a classes case and these are scattered in project bags. And yet I quite often find that my scissors are missing and need to buy another pair. Oh Yes! I bought some tiny scissors from the ScissorMan a few shows ago - they have blades that are a quarter of an inch long. (and they are pink too) They are permanently attached to the side of my portable cloth rubbish bag as they are so tiny I am frightened of misplacing them. Have a pair that the mechanism works the other way around and they hang from a lanyard around my neck. It would take 6 months to delve into all my hidey holes aka project bags etc to count them, so I won't. Want to spend that time crafting.
I have misplaced one of my smallest pair. They are so sharp and perfect for the tiny bits of thread. I must do a new search for them.
Over 30 pair but 10 better stay within my clubhouse or I will stitch somebodys pant legs together.
My dad did that to one of his younger brothers many years ago. He sat up after everyone went to bed and repaid his brother for a misdeed. They were very close, but every once in a while.... :)
That really made me laugh so much that I had many "guests" reading over my shoulder. It is quite a nice idea! Thanks
It is only me? I only have 2 pairs of scissors. One for cutting fabric and other little one for embroidery projects...I better start my collection. Love,Yoriko
There, you see............................there is one good girl amongst you........
I hope you are able to find many new scissors to add to your small collection. They are wonderful to have -- everyplace! ;)
Meant to answer this but was interuppted and just getting back now - lol! I have about 30 different kinds of scissors and have probably forgotten about a few more that I have. 2 pinking shears (my original pair that are hard on the hand but just can't part with them - I'm sure that must be another cutie trait - lol), 3 pairs emb. scissors, 3 pair reg. size fiskars with the spring action handle, 4 rotary cutter, 15 varying sizes, 2 just for paper etc., 2 kitchen ones, about 8 fancy edge ones. I think that's all, but not necessarily.
Only 13 pairs? I have scissors and scissors and scissors!!! In every drawer, shed greenhouse and at least 20 pairs in my sewing room. O let me not forget all the scissors for crafting to make interesting edges. Me addicted? Oh No. There are still times I can't find the right scissors!
I was only counting my sewing scissors and I realized I have several still in a drawer. We do need the right scissors for the job!
Oh my goodness this is such a funny thread. Well it has been established that Cutes have a scissor fetish me included. I am not going to count them. Not enough time for that. Is there such a thing as scissor-anonymous? Should we start one?
I love the laughter this place brings!
I won't mind joining as long as I don't have to get rid of an of my scissors or stop buying new ones I might need. LOL
I don't think we are anonymous anymore...... I have come out of the closet!
LOL! I feel so much better, I wouldn't know where to start counting. I have scissors everywhere to. My husband is just as bad. Still need more though after reading all of these posts. Thankyou my friends!!!
Too many to count, my fetish has always been scissors and knives. :)
I found three more pair of scissors today - in my car!!!
Great question. I am no even going to try to round them all up. I just know I have lots and still need more. My favorte snipping scissor have been sharpened that may times they are worn out. Had them sharpened just before Christmas, but it was not really a good job. Will have to buy another pair when I see just the right ones. Shirley
I stood and looked at the scissors while shopping at the fabric store today. Still looking...
I am not at home so I can't count mine. But I do want to tell you about my favorite pair. They are made by fiskar and are specially made to cut sheer and slick fabrics. I don't know how they work, but the fabric does not slip away from the scissors when cutting.like it does with standard scissors. I used to dread working with sheer fabric for that reason. One of the smartest purchases I've made. So maybe that helps explain why we need so many types.
Different tools for different needs. I may have to shop for another pair of scissors LOL
I may have to look for those too!
I think this post has made it worse!
I just read thru all the comments made since I first posted. I had such a good laugh!! OK, here's another one for you. Suture scissors are really great for trimming the jump stitches. I bought a few cheapy pairs on Ebay. Love them! Aren't we always looking for the "ultimate" scissors?!? lol. More Flowers to everybody!
I have 2 pairs of those,I just asked when I was in the hospital and they were given to me(i bet they put them on the bill)
Okay, I know that you have all been waiting patiently for my reply to this most important question. Of course, I do appreciate that the rest of you are of the female gender and as committed 'multi-taskers' it will be necessary for you to have scissors of multiple format and number spread both throughout your household and numerously at various locations within any given room, although it is beyond my logic to understand how you operate these all at the same time!
Now, being the odd one out here (no sarcastic remarks, please) and restricted as I am to the man-cave when carrying out my crafting skills (and most other times, come to think of it), male logic dictates that since I truly have only one pair of hands there is no point in duplicating my scissor requirements, let alone go to the lengths some of you have admitted to!!!
Accordingly, I present my collection in pictorial format (and yes, I'm not much of a photographer either):
Thank you for the pictures Dennis. I will restrain myself and not make any snide comments about your being scissor challenged. LOL
Phew! I'm surprised...................................or is it that you ladies are just feeling sorry for me?
I thought you would have many more (are you sure you aren't holding out on us) or you would have one big old super size pair that were multi purpose and you used for fabric cutting and jump stitch trimming. I'm surprised
Bev
Paper scissors? Did you forget those? And you obviously don't do knitting or crochet or hand embroidery where you need a pair of scissors in the project bag... :-)
Dennis, how can I interest my Man in doing some embroidery?? He needs something that doesn't take a lot of oomph.
Well, I wasn't going to 'go there' but I see that most other scissor-collectors have gone there and admitted having many, many, many pairs of scissors. I have scissors all over the place, wherever my craft and hand-work sits for more than a day. I just can't resist them. However, some of my very favourite ones are cheap, as in $2, finger-nail scissors. I've found they can have very sharp points and cut freely for hand-work. Then there is the army of folding scissors!! Can't resist them, either, and I just love the ones with fancy finger-holes although I had a thing about purchasing the smaller folding ones years ago when the Chinese shops stocked them in gorgeous little cardboard boxes/packets. I'm still not sure whether I bought them for their little packets or for their usefulness - obviously I bought too many as some have never been unpacked.
Of course, I have my fabric scissors, my paper scissors, my machine embroidery scissors with curved handles, long and short, my brilliant needle-pointed scissors and expensive and cheap stork scissors, kitchen scissors, hair scissors and extended scissors for toe-nail cutting and some to nip out to the garden and cut a flower or two.
Then there is the collection, no longer used or even very useful, probably rusty, of the little craft scissors I had when I was teaching in PNG. Supplies, such as scissors, were not available in the developing schools we started up so I just went to the trade stores in Goroka, Lae or Port Moresby, wherever we lived at the time and stocked up so that each child in the class would have scissors to use when needed. Even then I think I was completely addicted to these little tools of the trade and I don't think that addiction has ever abated because I have great difficulty in resisting buying 'just another pair' if I see them.
I just can't count them all but I do have many projects on the go and each project seems to have acquired a pair of scissors just for itself.
My girls are going to have a lot of fun some day sorting this lot out!!!
AlmaG.
Oh, wait!! I've got pinking shears, one pair works well and are big and heavy, the other pair now about 56 years old don't work.
And how on earth did a pair of scissors appear in my kitchen drawer with about 1/2 " of one blade broken off??? I can put that one down to either a sneaky husband or a sneaky son - the girls would never do anything like that.
What I don't have is a pair of kitchen scissors that cut through a cooked chook - some of those scissors look very tantalising...... I wonder... do I need a pair or not......
I HAVE a pair of scissors that will cut through a cooked chook. They are wonderful! However, I did not count them.
The scissors meant to trim skin or nails are perfect for thread bits!
Yes also would like to know what a chook is so I can get the necessary scissor for it. Please I need another pair.
Chicken for those in the USA
My Cutco scissors will cut through most anything...
I have two pairs of those chook cutting scissors in the kitchen and one in my container of potting equipment/implements for when I am gardening. They cut branches well too!
I have 12 scissors - one is especially my cutting scissor and NOBODY uses it EVER. Fortunately my DH is considerate and usually asks for a pair of scissors when he needs to cut something. I have full control - admittantly - no children around anymore.
My children know better than to use my scissors.
It must be nice to have full control of the scissors!
I am so glad you asked this! I thought it was just me!! I finally convinced my husband when he saw I bought some new "scissors" that they weren't just scissors they are "specialized tools!" And they are! It's like asking him how many wrenches are enough - right? We NEED the right tool for the job. So, I won't apologize when I saw I have at least 30. maybe more - but whois counting :-) Oh, yeah what about all those squiggly one for crafting?
Now, my son will know it is not just me. He knows we need the paper crafting scissors -- he has used those. He has a pair of sewing scissors. I think he thought one might only need a few...
How wonderful he gave you a new pair. He really knows what you love and need!
My boys pay close attention to what I wish for throughout the year. The little ones use their saved money from recycling cans to buy gifts. They are all wonderful children! I have been very blessed!
As do we......................pay close attention to your requirements, that is.....................................
I cannot even count them all----
Knitting bags each have scissors---each sitting location has several pair----NEVER ENOUGH.................
well .... lots but they aren't all unpacked yet. My favorites are the micro serrated Olfa scissors! They are not cheap but have big finger holes and aren't going to kill your hand when you are cutting out the 4,332 pieces of bonded fabric for one of those landscape quilt kits. I forget the name of the designer but they are beautiful. However, I will never do another one even if I do eventually finish this one from 2004!
A good craftsperson needs good tools.
You are brave to attempt such a quilt!
I do agree crafts require proper tools.
At least 60 (and why do we call them "pairs" cause then there would be 120...right?) Well I am also a lefty so I have probably a half dozen of left handed regular and pinking just for sewing and another couple lefties just for paper and crafts...and then I keep scissors in the car for coupons. And I have a couple of really old wallpaper scissors that are perhaps 14" long. I also HAD to have seldom used scallop shears (similar and expensive like pinking) which really didn't cut fabric all that well. And of course now the expensive little embroidery thread snipping scissors. I even hang 4 pair of orange handled cheap scissors out in the garden area that I can see easily when pruning and gardening. I think at least one pair of scissors in every room of the house. And of course one of every edge in paper cutters.
Perhaps we suffer from OCD...Overflowing Cutting Devices!?!?!?!
Pairs: because we could take them apart and have two sharp shear surfaces. I know -- I asked at my fabric shop. ;)
I like your OCD definition. I may need to use that.
Dennis never did say how many scissors lurk in his man cave, He probably has even more than the rest of us. lol. Come on Dennis, fess up
Bev
I'm still counting..............................and I'm trying to find my wide-angle camera lens to take a picture of my material sheers.
Oh! Are we just counting embroidery/sewing type scissors or all types?
Dennis, I think it includes all scissors meant for sewing/fabric/embroidery. I have not included my paper crafting scissors or my kitchen variety. That should bring the numbers down to a manageable count.
I do hope you can find the wide-angle lens. ;)
Thank you for the clarification. I thought that I was going to have to visit the garden tool shed and carry on counting there.................and it's a bit cold at present....lol. I shall try to come back to this in the morning.
Oh yeah, how about those metal cutters! And are wire cutters a type of scissors? When are snippers scissors or just snippers?
I would have to round them all up to count but they seem to be everywhere, Big ones, small ones, pinking, sharp, dull.stork scissors, had some with polka dot handles don't know where they are hiding, haven't seen them in awhile, I won't run out of scissors anytime soon. I also have a boatload of those little machine screwdrivers that come with sewing and embroidery machines. Good question from your young man
Bev
Thanks Bev. I am sure this will help him know I am not alone in having more than a few pairs of scissors...
Oh yeah, how about the kid scissors in with the crayons and craft paper, do we count those too?
I haven't counted but an educated guess would be 30+ of all types..but I do have shears,,8" 7" applique, jump stitch (curved to go over the hoop) 5" 4" 3" stork, and then the ones I use to cut out patterns...the ones I use to cut stabilizers and interfacing.
I am relieved to see that others share my addiction!
forgot to add in the 10 of 3 different sizes and types of rotary cutters and 2 Pinking shears! The ergonomic Fiskars, and the squeeze handle ones. So maybe more like 50+
My son said, "Oh WOW"!
I think you may have cured him. LOL
Many thanks to you! Hugs
You have to have some for cutting the cut away stabilizers... and paper patterns, right?
Let's see...Cheap Walmart scissors in almost every room of the house for paper cutting, 2 for 1.99, 6 pairs. When they are awful, I take them to the garden for stem and root cutting. Pinking shears - 3 - all inherited. Good fabric shears - 3. Embroidery trimmers (fingernail scissors) - 15, mostly dull. I couldn't bring myself to throw them away, and now I've taught myself to salvage them by sharpening with an emery board. Also, one gorgeous Floriani scissors set, still intact that I'm saving for a rainy day. Oh, and 2 kitchen shears. Isn't life funny?
I am considering an appropriate reply..........................................
Could I be otherwise.........................................? lol
Just don't look further down the page............................gulp!!
Sorry Dennis, he will read it all...you may not be his favorite male Cutie anymore. He loves his mommy a lot! He also gets mad when people try to use my scissors for other things. I am not sure who will take your place. lol
Well, you tell him from me that he is a very good boy for loving his mummy (sorry....mommy) so much. After all, Mummy Rescuer is a wonderful Mommy who not only looks after him so well but also takes good care of all the Cuties here.
OK Dennis, you may have made it back on the nice list. He did smile when he read your latest comment.
Thank you (and I am a Mum as well as a Mom when my eldest children want to show true affection they call me Mum)
Well, I have a scissor fetish...I can't seem to get enough of them...and every time I go to a show and Kai is there...well, I think you get the picture...I have a dozen pairs of Gingher's that are still in the boxes or tins...and at least a dozen Kai's that have never seen the light of day out of their sheaths...well, perhaps only when I take them out to look at them and carefully place them back in their little sleeve...it's more of an obsession...a must have...a can't walk past without buying a pair...and every year Kai comes out with something new...and I must say, I am seriously thinking I have a problem with rotary cutters, too...I would go to therapy, but then I couldn't spend that money on scissors or rotary cutters......
Sewing and scissors are MUCH cheaper than therapy and so much more fun!
I have 12 that I can think of right away. Those are MINE. In my sewing room. I didn't count any of the kitchen, hair cutting, general purpose, etc.
Don't even think about touching my scissors, besides you don't know the lock combination. ☺
LOL
I need some locks!
I didn't count my hair cutting or kitchen scissors. He knows what the hair cutting scissors are used for LOL
My husband put a label on his scissor on his desk that said "Take and die"
Great idea! But the lock never would have worked at our house, both kids went to "work" at the family business- locksmithing- at age 13. Kept them out of mischief.
Let's see..... Too many to count. I like the 4" ones with the sharp point and the BIG finger holes. Think I have 6 or more of them. Scattered all over the place. Then there are the 6" ones with the big holes, 4 or 5 of them. Then the fabric ones. I love the Fiskars with the spring action. I ruined my favorite one by running up on a pin and trying to cut it. I have this lovely little notch now. Keep thinking I can have it sharpened out. But easier to buy a new pair and save the old ones for paper. Never have too many scissors.
I have retired some of my scissors to the kitchen in the past. But now that is too dangerous. It has been a real challenge to teach my husband not to use my sewing or hair cutting scissors for other things.
I admit I'm a scissor holic too and I'm not looking for a cure. lol!
I have about 30, I have 3 working areas and you know they each have to have there own scissors, and if you go to any room in your house, there has to be scissors there, as I crochet there. thanks for asking. LOL
We do need scissors in all stations for certain. LOL
I have some at the ironing board -- but that is dangerous at my house. They could be used for other "stuff"
I have no idea. Do I count the ones my husband took for the garage? LOL
That's just typical..........................blame the husband! It is interesting to note that in all other posts (not scissor-related), the phrase used is always 'dear husband' or just 'DH' but just because you've lost a pair of old scissors he is referred to dismissively as 'my husband'!
Furthermore, are you sure that they are not rattling around in your washing machine....................only that's where most of your other prized embroidery apparatus appears to be stored for safe keeping?
Just one more thing, possession is nine-tenths of the law and anything removed to the man-cave becomes 'finders-keepers.'
At least she still claims him! LOL
That "finders-keepers" thing may just work for me with some of his money for some nice, new, sharp scissors. ;)
Too many, or still not enough - I don't know. I inherited both my mother's and her younger sister's sewing baskets, so that's an excuse for having a lot of small embroidery scissors, and medium and large cutting ones. And there are small promo ones from the quilter's guild, those that came with my sewing and/or embroidery machines, serger and overlocker.
And, of course, I bought quite a few must-haves myself before that and since then. Only thing I don't have is a buttonhole one, but I don't intend sewing them by hand anyway.
I'm with Sue, I'm not going to search for all of them and count them! But I could make up a lot of sewing kits complete with (ITH) pincushions and needle holders I digitised and sewed.
I am certain he will get the idea that you have quite a few. I am not sure one could ever have enough. I am always "losing" a pair as I am constantly burying them under a piece or two of fabric.
Did you know you should never give scissors to anyone. They might cut the friendship. You should always ask for a little money when you give scissors. It's an old wives tale.
Same seems to apply to knives too. A month or so ago our king got an honorary sword in some ceremony or other and had trouble getting a coin out of the pant pocket in his fancy pair of trousers. Added some unexpected fun to that military occasion.
Martine I didn't read about that -- yet. I must search that now. Sounds thrilling!
In front of me hanging up on the old mug tree (that I keep my scissors on) are 12 from small to large and I know there are more in another room where I also sew. My very best fabric scissors are in a box in a drawer. One cannot have too many scissors. Are you going to show the replies to your son?
Yes I will show him the responses, he often reads the posts here. He knows the avatars/names of many Cuties. He is very interested in all his mommy does. My youngest two sons will sit and watch the embroidery machine and ask questions about this site. They also help me sell my projects at craft fairs. Even my older boys (all over 20 years) will help out at the craft fairs.
I also like scissors and I know I have at least 20 pair without going and gathering them all up. I think I have every kind of scissors that are on the market and rotary cutters I must have 6 or 7 so I am a little bit out of control. Don't get me started on fabric as I could probably open my own fabric store.
I need just the right pair of scissors for each station as I have more than one machine.
We won't go into fabric collections. LOL
My son asked the same question when he returned from the Army... My response was, "And just how many screwdrivers do you have?", he replied "Point taken." and shut up. I have 24 pair that I can see at the moment not counting 5 rotary cutters or household scissors. Okay, so I like scissors! :)
My son only asked as he and his (1 year younger) brother had purchased a new pair for me for Christmas. I think he was afraid he had not purchased the right kind. He is fascinated by sewing and embroidery. He is only 10 years old and adorable. He will learn soon enough the reason I have so many.
They add such joy to my life! I am thankful each day that I have been blessed with such wonderful children.
Oh goodness scissors they are my failng I am always buying them, have just bought another pair that makes 12 pairs all over my sewing room, and beware if any of my family comes looking for MY SCISSORS, there are scissors for bedroom and kitchen they can use lol
My husband made the mistake once -- he learned (I hope) as he had to go to the Fabric store and pay for the new pair. LOL
I tie a little ribbon on the handle of the ones that CAN cut other things so I don't make a mistake.
I decided to photograph my collection. And I threw away 4 pairs only 3 weeks ago too! Love scissors, and my rotary cutters. I even have a curly blade somewhere in my Horn cabinet. As you can see I have a love of the Canary curved scissors as I do a lot of applique! My favourite pair is the large black one in the foreground - no-one is allowed to use them, they are a pair of Kai 7250SE Micro-Serration scissors. Love Chris
I also have my favorite pair. Thankfully he didn't include the rotary cutters.
15 pairs for fabric, another pinking shears that don't cut, 2 snips and then there's the "for paper only" scissors!! Sure hope my hubby never goes out there & counts them!! But not to worry, he'd never find them in my mess of a sewing room!! :-) So tell your son you're not so bad!
I didn't count paper scissors or the kitchen scissors. I had to buy several pair just so my husband would stop looking in my sewing room for something to use for cutting...
