We had our carnival parade today (in the Ruhr area yesterday with the big parades in Cologne and Düsseldorf) and Felix got a lot of "kamelles" (sweets - the groups thow them for the kids). We live in a small village but he got a full bag. There were groups dresses as "Minions" and "Super Mario" and a small group with traditionell masks from the alemannic carnival. When I was small they really scared me...
Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and like it is said in the song then it is all over until the next season (starting on the 11/11).
Greetings, Bettina
PS: Felix looked so much like this music group at the right that I feared he could follow them ;o)
Bettina this sounds like our village carnival that is in the summer. Looks like everyone is having a great time. Were you dressed up?
No costume for me Caroline. I'm not such a big fan of carnival cause here it is often in a close connection with a lot of alcohol and thereby aggression. I can be very funny without a single drop of alcohol ;o)
Hopefully nobody (or to be fair, everybody) wasn't using a cast iron frying pan - lol! Would be fun to watch!
What a fun race! I think we may have breakfast for dinner tonight.
Phew................................I'm worn out, having just got in from participation in the Great Monkton Pancake Splat Race Day. I did win a prize for the most tasty pancake. Here is my certificate:
I am glad your ticker allows the occasional race day! You should rest now as we can't have you going AWOL again...
I can see me doing this, flipping the silly thing and running into it
...blinders the rest of the way. What a hoot! lol :0
I remember you telling us about this last year and I was so enthralled. What fun! I'd love to participate.
Oh my goodness. We tried this when I was a kid in Girl Scouts. Needless to say, a lot of cleaning up had to be done.
Never heard of it, but this looks like fun. I remember racing with eggs on spoons and falling on my face having a sack race. How many pancakes end up on the ground? I can't even flip one standing still in my kitchen.
Ha, ha Sue that would not change anything in my case. My dog would appreciate the unexpected treat, because anything on the floor she claims.
That takes me back to the early 70s when we lived in Ewell, Surrey. Myriam had a race at Primary School. Never heard of it before that. Here it is carnival (mainly in the southern parts of the country) or nothing.
I will happily watch and cheer everyone on. If I try to race, I will probably weave a bit and take someone down with me.
I love pancake day, well pancakes most of all. I'm not up to racing this year as I am having surgery on my shouder this afternoon.
This means that I will have to have the next few days off work to "rest" so it's not all bad news.
I have set up my machine ready to stitch out some lace designs. I'm sure I can manage one handed!
Hooping with one hand? Please do not overdo it. That shoulder needs to heal
Used to race at daughters school - lol.... long time ago....
I live near Sedgefield and they still have a Strove Tuesday "Ball Game"
There's one of those at Ashbourne in Derbyshire today as well. We have a similar one near here on 6th January (the Haxey Hood)
I told the kids this evening before I left Dana's home that it was Pancake Tuesday today and Ash Wednesday tomorrow. I explained to Ryke that he might see some children at school with an ash cross on their foreheads to remind them of what Jesus did for us. Love Chris
My mother told stories about egg and spoon races. cheers
They were a major feature of all Primary School Sports Days in the 1950's! We used the pot eggs used for broody chickens.
I remember the fun we had at sports day at school. Also at the cycle club we used to do egg and spoon races on bikes round an obsticle course. Great fun.
This made me smile. Never heard of this tradition!!
Still quite widespread here in England. They even have one at the Houses of Parliament.
Oh Sue - this takes me back a bit. I can remember my mother racing and tossing a pancake at the same time. The neighbours made quite a party of Shrove Tuesday. Thank you for this post.
Not sure who the cook is at this bit of the UK. I thought it was last week so we had some then :)
