Yesterday evening my neighbour's brother-in-law gave me a surprise package of knitting yarn, very thin, and a lot of it. He had helped moving an old lady (actually only 5 years older than me) to a senior flat and she asked him to find someone who might use it.

My grandson "ordered" a sweater in red 10 days ago, so I don't have to shop for that.
The yarn is thinner than the Burmilana embroidery thread I have. I think I'll mix the two larger cones of red together, maybe even all three, to get a thicker yarn and use my old knitting machine. The larger cones weigh over 1 kg (more than 2 lb) each. I'd had to live to a 100 to knit all these by hand.

I mixed 3 colours and knitted a swap. I think it works well.

Looks like knitting machine yarn. Nice big cones to make cardigans and Well done to the family for obeying the lady's wishes.

Sorry, PC doesn't like me typing!
It should read 'cardigans and jumpers. Well done'

It would be enough yarn to make hundreds if not thousands.

I find it a bit hard, you have to be focused not to knit 2 of the 3 threads, and usually I hardly watch my needles. But the knitting machine will no doubt be more accurate.

I think it is just wonderful to have a grandson that thinks of you first upon receiving a box from a sweet lady who wanted to share.
I so often see when things are thrown away instead of given to others.
What a great grandson.
I can tell you are enjoying yourself.

My 11 yr old grandson was the one who asked me to knit him a sweater - in red. My neighbour's BiL was the kind one who thought of giving me the box with goodies. And I agree that is a wonderful gesture and ideas for other projects than the red sweater are accumulating rapidly.

Someone up above knew you needed red yarn and he delivered. Your swatch looks good. Hope you'll post a picture of the finished sweater.

I found a lot of those cones in the local Goodwill. Bought them and can't decide what to do with them.

Well, I have got just one idea at the moment, might do some (machine)knitted white lace blankets or wraps. The rest - well, I hope ideas will come.

It looks like wool to me. Very nice! I love red! Happy stitching, no matter if it is hand or machine!

Looks like it will be a wonderful sweater for your grandson. I see there are several other cones that could be mixed (blues, and then white/neutrals) to make even more projects. That was quite thoughtful of your neighbor to think of you. Such a nice surprise, indeed!

Yes, I am quite pleased with the mix and thought about mixing others as well later. Those cones are large enough for several sweaters each.
My neighbour's brother lives in a different part of the country and I had embroidered quite a few things for his wife, but it was a great surprise he thought of me.

Looks like his wish has come true. It goes together really well and I'm sure it will be a beautiful sweater. I can't wait to see it.
I think you must have bought tickets to the yarn lottery. Lucky you.

Thanks. I sent the picture to my DiL so she can decide, or rather GS can have the last word.
It will take me awhile but I will post it.

These look like the cones I have for weaving on my loom. Haven't done any weaving at all lately, maybe I will get back to again some day. Cheers, Bev.

They do, but the thread breaks too easily to be used for weaving.

What a nice surprise.
I have some similar yarn stored away with a knitting machine. The machine is very old and tired though!
I've probably had more knitting machines than sewing machines over the years. They seem to wear out more quickly and become obsolete so the parts are unavailable.

I have some cones left that I have been using for knitting (needles 2.5 mm) and crocheting. Was happy to see my stash reducing slowly but steadily...
My machine is still OK, but you are right about the spare parts. I have an obsolete Toyota.
