Wow! What a lot of work! I must say tho, you did a fantastic job!!!
AWESOME!! I could never imagine even starting a project like this -- and for your first quilt too. Congratulations on finishing this project and I imagine Caleb will love it
He does, thanks. It was given to him 2 years ago, but thanks for looking....Just dive it like I did!-lol-and don't imagine the time it takes.
This must weight a ton! Lots of work but well worth it, looks great
I told him to commercial wash it when it needed cleaning just because of the weight. Thanks for looking.
Wow, that is amazing. I like how the red looks on the back. You are something. Thank you so much for sharing.
Why, thank you. I thought of stitching in blue, but I liked the red stitches showing, too.I may do another, I have plenty jeans and try without batting, so it will be more like a blanket for picnics.
Went to quilter site---great tutorial. I save to my bookmarks. Thanks Toogie--what a great way to use up scraps and use those old denim jeans. Always can find those at yard sales nice and cheap.
Whoa!!! $50-00 for that small runner---great scot girl, your queen size is priceless!!! I haven't watched the video yet on their site. I do watch PBS all the time and saw a segment on Sewing With Nancy [that is, Nancy Zieman] She did this same technique and used the slit, then it is hid behind the petal. I do love your denim recycling and the red check fabric.
I added another link at the top to show this is the one I read. The post that got me started.
What a great quilt!!I haven't seen one done this way and it looks like fun (for a small one). I think it would be fun to put on the label 2014, 2015 &2016!!
In that case it should read 2012*2014- I cut the BJ circles out in 2012.Skipped 2013 altogether, then cut the batting and check fabric and assembled in 2014....I have lots of BJ fabric left and will most likely do another in the future.
WOW! This is amazing! I love what you have done here. I watched the video ( thanks bev ) and now I am inspired! First though, I have to re organize my sewing room...my cutting table is still covered in Christmas wrap and fabric! lol !
Hugs, and I hope you feel better soon,
Nadyne
I'm okay, thanks-I wish there had been a video I was aware of when I made mine. I read a post and went from there, no info how to construct :(
Nice quilt... Lots of work. Thanks for sharing all the details. Mechille :)
Oh Toogie - it turned out spectacular!! What hard work - well done!
Thank you Laura, wish I could start on another while I'm in the mood and can't do much else.
Wow Toogie, this is gorgeous! I know that you are happy to be done (doing the same thing 255 times!). The end result is worth the work.
I'm was tired of cutting 765 pieces!-lol- 255 each of blue jean, red gingham, and batting!!! Yes, it was worth it in the end, I was satisfied and more importantly, so was he. Thanks for always supporting my efforts.-Toogie
You have done a fantastic job! I am sure her is going to love it.
I can't imagine him not liking it. Please get that needle and tread out. In years to come he will need to see the love stitched out as "Caleb-Love always Gram 2014-" but please give it a name and some how the 2012 start as well as the 2014 finish. I am sure you can hand stitch it in.
Your an inspiration Toogie. Thank you.
Look at the link I added. It has the label, pillowcases and shams I made to go with the quilt/bedcover.
Thanks for your support!-Toogie
Wow, love it. You have done a great job, Toogie, congratulations!
Hugs, Lidia
What an awesome job! This should last forever with that jean material! Lucky grandson!
WoW!!!! I don't quilt so I am amassed. I have quilt envy! Kay
Peafarm, here is the link with the slit, you were talking about. This is a runner (check out the price of the runner kit!) but its the same concept for a quilt, any size.
Oh, Toogie, what a mammoth task, you have come through with flying colours, a fabulous job. Your quilt is stunning, Caleb is going to treasure his quilt for ever. Another UFO finished with much joy and love for your grandson. Do hope you are feeling better now, Happy new year to you and your family, hope 2016 is a great year for all. Sandra.
I am feeling better, thank you and I hope 2016 is good for all of us on & off Cute. Go back to doc on the 2nd....Sandra this was made almost 2 years ago, but I still appreciate your comments. All the grandson want a jean quilt now-lol
Love this--is this where you make a slit and then it is hid behind the 'petal'? It looks great and a big job too. I've made a reversible King Size Quilt and one day---ha ha---when I can get the pic of it and husband gets the pics off the camera I will post it. It is strip pieced.
lol-You need to learn to upload all those pics you keep promising me, and not depend on him!-your excuse is getting weak-lol- No I don't make a slit here. Look at the link in bevintex post below. I didn't know they had a ruler for this, but I'm not surprised.(See my tools below) Watch the video. I did mine pretty much like she explains except I adding batting and did a satin stitch all over. It took a lot of thread! I also made them in 9 circles to a block, then joined them by rows. It got pretty bulky, I can tell you. If I did another I think I wouldn't put batting or if I did I would use warm & natural so it would be flatter to sew & handle. I suppose if you let the edges fray, like in Bev's link, I would rather do a zizag 1/4 in away. I think it would have a better chance of holding up, washing after washing.
I have plans to make one of these, June Tailor sells the charming circles ruler .I bought mine on ebay cheaper than other places. Makes it much easier, now i just have to get started
Should have checked with you first! You always know where to go for what-lol-I think my blocks are a little larger than this ruler, tho. This was brought up because of my post in SEWING asking all quilters.
I love it Toogie. So glad you got it done. Doesn't it give you a great sense of satisfaction knowing it's all done and such a beautiful job you did/Lillian
I did feel good about finishing it, Lillian. I finished it and made Nora's pinwheel right after. Now I think I'm ready to make another one. I have a post in Sewing right now, I'd like input on. This quilt/post is 2 years ago.
Brendalea-I'm glad you like my quilt, thank you. These are the size of my circles,in the photos. However it is pretty with so many,I could not make them larger,so I wouldn't have so many circles,,b/c I was useing used jeans and mostly the leg of them.-I used a plastic for my patterns.Because after tracing and cutting, over and over, if you use a cardboard the edges may not stay consistent.#1-BJ circle 7 3/4 inches #2 the sq can be just shy of 5 1/2 inches, but you want to make sure, esp if you have also used hi-loft batting as I did, that it goes all the way to the inside corners, when you fold over the BJ edges #3 just showing the two patterns together-Hope this helps you.I did not have anything showing, how to construct, so that is why I took photos, for future reference.I do hope you like my pattern as well,it was an all-around- winner ! Hubby ate the ice cream and grandson gets the quilt!-LOL
Love the quilt. Thank you for the pictures of how you put it together. I have a few magazines with this pattern and your way looks much easier.
What size are your circles? Happy Stitching
Thank you so much for the pm I should of looked a little closer to the pictures. Going to try it after I finish a few UFO's. Spring Break is here hoping to get lots done. Happy Stitching
Very nice! And u can still add the label by hand-stitching it on.
BRAVO. Toogie! This is amazing! Such a lot of work and a magnificent result! I'm sure he's gonna love it!
Thank you,I hope so, in fact I'm sure he will.He is off Sunday,so he said he was going straight home after church,so we'll drop it off then.I'm sure his girlfriend will be there too,as she goes to church with him.
Beautiful manly quilt for a nice looking young man.
Not nearly as nice and handsome as him,but thank you.He is my firstborn, grandson.
Stunning. What a lot of work. Great done
Thank you, thank you, thank you, as I know you are one of the quilters here.-Toogie
This is gorgeous! Just perfect for a male. I've kept most of the jeans that have shrunk just hanging in my cupboard, I''ll have to tackle something like this one day!
All my males that have seen it,like the blue jean side. You now know it is possible to do one this size out of BJ, but my advice is a twin is a big enough job.......Isn't it amazing how most of our clothes do keep shrinking as we get that 'middle age spread'_lol-Just joking not talking about anyone in peticular.-Toogie
its a great quilt Toogie ,just perfect for a young man
That is beautiful. You did a great job. I have one sitting in a closet I started with the circles and jeans. I got tired of making all the circles and putting them together. Not very patient. One of these days I'll get it out. I know how much work it took for you to put this together and I applaud you. thumbs up.
Thank you. This is how I worked-in August 2012 I cut out all 255 BJ circles and marked my sqs inside. Then sewed BJ in 9 circle blocks. Put in storage bin. About 2 weeks ago,Feburary 2014,I cut out 255 red check sqs and 255 batting.I didn't stop till I finished.Oh yes I did, when I went to the ER and then slept 4 days-LOl-then I finished!
I absolutely love it!!! Toogie it is so nice, your grandson will cherish your quilt! I hope he appreciates as much as you love him!!! Your work is excellent! I am so glad you finished your ufo! Please get better soon, I've certainly missed seeing you on here! I do love both sides of your quilt. Not every quilt is reversible so you have done two in one! Sharon
Sharon,I think the men like the denim side, so when he marries, she'll flip it,IF she's strong enough. This is one heavy quilt.I made a label,I'll have to make another post.I also have a photo my son just took of me hand stitching the label on.I told him I had no photos of me working on it,but most of the time I was in my gown-lol
You did not pick a beginner quilt for your first bed sized quilt. Yet you did a stellar job!! I'm really impressed. I've made a lot of quilts, and have a love of using denim, and still probably wouldn't do that one. The nice thing though is that once each block is done, then you don't have to fuss with it anymore. Great job!!
Why can you not make a label for it now? Since it is finished, what you would want to do would be to hand stitch it on the back. But that shouldn't be a problem at all. I would definitely label this quilt. It will be a treasure for him forever more.
You mean this is not for beginners?!! No one told me that! I always look at a magazine backwards so I guess this is how I will do quilts-LOL-I just made the label and hand stitched it on the denim side.I'll have to make another post. and show you-Thanks,toogie
Wow, Toogie! Wonderful job for your first quilt! That pattern is quite the challenge, esp sewn with blue jeans! You did a fantastic job on this and your grandson will cherish it the rest of his life! He is adorable, too! Flowers to everybody!
Thanks for all the comments. It's my first big quilt, have done baby size before.
this quilt is amazing ..great work ..he will love it always
Beautiful !! I love every bit of this. Your GS is a handsome young man and I can see the loving nature in his eyes. So yes you have reason to be very proud of him. Doing on his own. I am proud of your beautiful quilt 1st work. Wow!!!!!! I am sure he will be thrilled. The label will cinch this work of love.
Thank you for all the comments. His dad just came and he liked the jean side best.He also took my photo while i was working on the label patch, will have to post elsewhere, won't let me here.
WOW!! - what a lot of work!!! And it's gorgeous. You should be incredibly proud of yourself and get a massage if possible for your body. How wonderful - a young man that actually has something made especially for him by his grandmother. That will be treasured I know. Thanks so much for sharing this.
Looks absolutely amazing Toogie. And your grandson looks a handsome young man and from what you say about him must have a wonderful nature. I know he will love every stitch of your quilt. Something for him to keep throughout his life. Love Chris
Chris, you know your approval means so much to me.It was hard to handle to satin, zizzag around the curves, when doing the long rows together. It was heavy and would stitch tighter in some places, when it wanted to bog down.At least it won't be coming unstitched! It took a LOT of thread. He is sentimental and I know he will appreciate the work and love.Thanks-T
You did a beautiful job and I'm so happy no one told you not to tackle one so complicated for a first quilt, because you might have listened and then you wouldn't so experienced with this one. Way to go!
The only thing complicated was sewing it as it increased in size.It was so heavy and I have one arm that gives me the dickens anyway.I am glad you like it-Toogie
Congratulations ! The quilt is amazing
And you have a very handsome grandson, too
Lois
Congratulations on finishing a UFO! I am very happy for you & such a wonderful endevor too! This is a wonderful quilt that you have made for your grandson! I'm sure he will treasure it & love it as much as you do him! It's so much harder to sew anything when you are not felling 100% You did an amazing job getting it all done my friend! Hugs loralye
Thank you, your appreciation means a great deal to me.I know he will appreciate it too, he probally will be surprised I finally finished it.
Great job. Reminds me of quilts by Charlie of Quilters Haven. I really like the way you have added the batting only under the check fabric. The puffy effect is a nice touch. I suspect it makes sewing the circles together easier than with batting under all of it.
OH, well done. It looks great. Blue jeans do get heavy, don't they. I made a rag quilt with some. I've decided I don't like large quilts, I'm trying to finish my UFO, and have to rest my hands every other day. Soon, though!
Jo
I like the bigger quilts, just want to try a design that doesn't require a lot of cutting pieces,as my back gives out.And don't do one right now.I have about 6 items that HAVE to get done.
This is really perfect for a man. You are lucky you are only dizzy...I'd be in a padded cell if I tried this. :P Nice look young chap you are giving this to. He's a keeper.
Oh my! What a great job. It always brings a good feeling when one finishes a job. I am sure he will love this especially because you made it. The colors are perfect for the outdoors man like you describe.
See his jeans he has on? Now are in the quilt.Yes,I am glad it's done all but his label, I forgot.
I admdire your patience and dedication to finishing your quilts! They are fabulous! Your grandson will love it and know how much he is loved whenever he sees it. His quilt will stay with him throught his life and be treasured by him.
Thank you,but this is the only big quilt I have ever made. The jeans he has on in this photo,is probally in this quilt now!-lol
This is who the quilt is for.He is an outdoorsman, hardworking, living on his own and I am so proud of him, being independant at such a young age.I dearly love him!
You did a great job with this quilt. The red- white-blue looks good together and to cut the 255 circles und again 510 squares (batting and the red pieces) must have taken a long long time. You have my admiration for this work.
Bärbel
Thank you it was a work of love for him.Yes, 255 circles,255 red sqs,255 batting...no reason my head is spinning! All machine sewn, tho
