Love your quilt and the idea of using up your scrap pieces I will have to bank it in my to do list.
Too ambitious for me Monika but I'll gladly send you some of my scraps. :-)
I took you up on this idea. Thank you for giving me the courage to tackle it.
Oh the memories, as I saw your scraps laid out on your cutting mat, I recognize the first long strip on the left. I had a dress made of that fabric while going to college in 1980 living in Southeast Missouri. My first Semester away from home and that trip to the fabric store almost caused me a stroke at a young age as I made the newbie error of not checking the price per yard working out first just how much the total cost for all the materials and notions would add up to be for the 3 dresses one of which was double layered eyelet that was quite expensive, costing almost $100 for that eyelet dress alone. OUCH! I believe I went on a dry popcorn diet for almost 2 weeks until my next paycheck. Lesson learned.
Hope everyone is motivated to use up some of their material stash. I use to belong to a club that whoever died with the most material was the winner. I have since resigned my position and created an individual club with quite different rules and they are very strict. I must use predominately material I already own until my bins and bolts are drastically reduced. I still have far too much remaining.
great memories for you ,I am always trying to use up my scraps ,but my stash never get any smaller
My word......you have certainly inspired a lot of interest in quilting. I will be having a try and I am not quilter. Maybe a mug rug to start with. Your instructions are so clear, thanks for sharing.......Ann
I made a giant, super king size braid quilt but my sashing strips are wider and a royal blue. If the top ever turns up I'll post a picture. it is fun and I was inspired buy a girl who's strips were 3/4 x 2.5 inches for a miniature! They are fascinating to look at!
Hi Toogie , yes we have been very busy ,what a fantastic day ,
now back to the quilt
the center strips are 2,1/2" by 60,1/2" long but you could make any length you like, and it would probably be easier to add the strips before you trim the edges off ,
Iva ,Toogie has given some good advice ,I cut on the straight grain ,its my choice not to prewash fabrics ,but a lot of quilter do ,its up to you ,I always wash my quilts ,on a nice windy day so they dry quick ,I have never had a fabric run but I always hang outside in the sun ,but thats easy for us here in Australia,

Hi, I am new to quilting so thought this might be a place to start. But I have a couple questions. Hope they dont seem silly to all of you. Does this material have to be washed and dried first? and Does this material have to be cut on bias or just the cutting of the strips, is that what is on the bias. Thanks Iva
The strips are on the bias at the outer points, when they are trimmed off.DON"T cut the strips themselves on the bias. The 2 1/2 x 7 and the 2 1/2 in block are cut with the grainline. It might be better to mark your 1/4 stitching line at the edge of point side, then sew your long strip, the one in between on,then trim the points off leaving your 1/4 in seam. That might keep the outer edge from stretching,as you sew together.I am just commenting, because aussiequilter must be quilting another quilt-lol-and hasn't answered any of our questions.I have sewing skills, but I haven't quilted much. This is just like cutting and making anything else, though. Some people say wash, others say it doesn't matter....I say wash.Suppose you spend all this time on it and the first time it is washed, one color runs and changes the whole quilt.I just washed a very pretty piece. It had a white background with red in it.It changed that white to another color. If a piece bleeds can change or ruin the whole quilt.
mommadooks-I forgot -aussiequilter is working, getting all those quilts hung and displayed for victims of a bush fire.
thank you for showing the pictures,
Fantastic idea to use up all those smaller pieces!
Monica,Are you coming back after your chevron strip is long enough, and laying your ruler to the edge and trimming those points off?About how many of these 2 1/2 x 7 strips would you need ,for a queen sized quilt? how wide are your strips in between the rows?
Since you are either asleep or quilting,I will assume the long strips are the same width 2 1/2. I was thinking to sew the long strip on first and then trim the points off. That may help keep them from stretching.Hello...Hello Monica......
Love your quilt! I have a jelly roll that I'm saving for this pattern. Have to finish a couple more projects before I start a new one. Thanks for sharing. Hope you'll share a picture of the finished project.
Fantastic idea to use up all those smaller pieces. Makes a very bright quilt will have to have a go. Hugs
thank you for this design. I think it would make a beautiful vest.
Further to my other post.... I have just packed the car with a bag of fabric and scraps, olfa cutter and board and my machine and I'm heading off to the quilt shop for some fun with the ladies. I am suddenly inspired to cut out the 2 1/2" x 7" pieces and get moving a new quilt top. I'll visit Don for lunch at the nursing home where he's having a few weeks of respite care and then I'll sew for the afternoon. Your Chevron braid quilt has me all fired up and I'm planning to start the first row of mine ..... today!!!
Thank you so much for giving me this great urge to sew again.
Alma.
Alma ,i would love to see how you go with the strips ,Im glad I inspired you to do some sewing
This is the sort of quilt that appeals to me immensely. The riot of colour is fascinating and exciting. I call this Pioneer Braid. It took me years to work out how to do it... didn't know about Google then - eventually I asked my best pal who has made many braid quilts, one in particular from men's ties that looks superb with all the silk glimmer. When I do the braid and I'm ready to sew on the sashing I sew it on to just match the edge of the inner right angles and then I cut the extra little corners off. That's how I avoid the stretching on the bias that might (and probably would with me) occur if I cut the corners off first.
I just love the colour you've chosen for your sashing. It makes all the scraps pop. What a vibrant, lovely quilt this is going to be. I love it.
AlmaG.
It looks great, I love the scrappy effect this definately one everyone can do
I have a jelly roll waiting to make a table runner and mats like this. I'm going to quilt as I go along.
Just one jelly roll????? why don't i believe you. I too would quilt as i go , simply because i could not handle a large quilt but strips are fine.
I love the "braid" or chevron quilts and never really thought about using scraps. All those leftover jelly roles will be perfect. Thanks for sharing your idea and very pretty quilt.
Thanks for the reminder. I was trying to figure out what other quilt I could do to use up my scraps
You must have been on you tube, also.I will eventually get one like this done, since I have so many that don't match and not real big.I purchased 2 more pieces today, please pardon me,I confess I love fabrics. Here they are.
no ,not utube ,just out of my head ,,,Toogie ,the bunny fabric is the cutest Easter I have ever seen
I am thinking of so many, maybe that's why I am dizzy-lol- look up the missouri quilt company Summer in the Park tutorial how she makes the blks.I don't want to buy jelly rolls with all the yardage that I already have.I thought of doing that one with my yardages.-I thought the one you have here with all those pieces from the elderly friend.-What do you think? Would this be something for me to attempt?-The one like this, doesn't really matter,I'll use scrap pieces. The other yardages, how do you choose the colors for the quilt? Like these 2 1/2 strips, how do you know how many you would need, say for a queen size quilt?
In just went through my scrap bin ,i ddnt worry about colour or design ,it was just the first one I picked up ,you surly could use yardage ,but I want to use up my scraps .I will check our missouri ,maybe I could make another one ,there are about 30 strips in each of my 6 rows ,I have borders on now ,I will send you a picture, sure you can do it Toogie ,I will help you ,
Thank you for the encouragement, but I still have that list to make first.....I suppose tho, with me anyway, there will always be a list, since I like to keep going.Just emb about 19-20 for church a few weeks ago and was given I don't know how many more.So many sick....
