HELP !!! I purchased a new computer 10 days ago with Windows 8 and had the "wonderful geeks" transfer all of my information from the old tower to the new one.......Well this worked just fine until it got to my embroidery software....I have Viking 3-D Embroidery software (and don't want to purchase new software) anyway they were able to download/reinstall everything except the drivers for the reader/writer box....of course I must have the R/W box to take the designs to the emb. machine. He went to the Viking site but could not find an update or anything to get the drivers to the new computer......Has anyone else had this problem....how did you get the drivers......Bobbie, desperate in Memphis !!

Brother offers some solutions, but Pfaff/Husqvarna does not, they don't offer a new driver. They informed me that you need XP or Vista. Unfortunately Windows 8.1 does not offer a virtual XP or Vista.

I'm beginning to have nightmares about what to do with the end of support for XP and my 5D software which is necessary for the operation of the D-card reader/writer for my machine. I never imagined that VSM Group would terminate driver upgrades. It seems obvious that these corporations are run by MEN who have no clue about the importance of OUR equipment or that funds may be unavailable to purchase new computers, embroidery machines, and supporting software.

I understand about the nightmares........I was having them too. I spent 3 hours with the Tech showing me how to use the new computer and how to transfer the designs to the virtual XP so they can be put on the R/W card.....I can tell you my head is still spinning.

HALLELUJAH..........I finally have my new computer, it is running
Windows 8 and the Virtual XP both.......My Tech at Office Depot was wonderful......He searched endlessly for Drivers for the XP but as you all know they are no longer available......I have a wonderful friend in California who is very computer savy, and from a link she suggested he was able to install the Virtual XP into the Windows 8. Now I just have to learn how to use it.....I was really going through computer/embroidery withdrawal.

I want to thank all of you who gave me suggestions and tried to help....it was very much appreciated.

CORRECTION....I meant to say He was trying to find drivers for my reader/writer box for 3DEmbroidery........not drivers for XP..

Hope your problem get sorted out soon.

All fine and well to have 2 PC's, one running XP, until the resident PC maintenance/repair guy decide to steal (they call it borrow, but on a permanent basis) parts off your old PC running on XP...

Happened to me twice - my ex was repairing a PC for a friend, and just grabbed parts off my PC. Sorted him out but good, just to have the same happen to me when my son upgraded his PC and he grabbed and reformatted drives off my old PC, which I specifically kept for all my old language programs etc which did not run on the new versions of windows...

My son just laughed and said no-one uses those programs anymore. I did, but it did not count - he said it was time for me to move on with the times. So my embroidery designs are now backed up on an external drive, which is hidden away.

You guessed it - my son needed an external drive a few years back, borrowed mine without telling me, wiped all the stuff on it, it can not be important, what can Mom have that's actually important?

So he does not even know about my current external drive. And I never uses it when there is ANY chance that he can see it.

Enjoy the rest of the week!
Anneliese

My word!! That would be the last time he came NEAR my computer! I am just shocked!! So sorry, but glad you now have it all hidden away!

i do not have a viking machine however i do know about software conflicts that is why I purchased a windows 7 machine on ebay and it was very inexpensive compared to windows8 and i have 3x the space my old laptop had when it went down and 4x the ram to run my programs and gave less than 500.00 for the CPU

Anyone looking for Windows 7 should look online. Store may tell you it is no longer available (I wonder) but it is still out there. I found numerous versions a few minutes ago at Newegg.com. Other electronic etailers may have it as well. OfficeMax advertised computers with Win 7 last weekend.

You can still order it (even in the stores if you insist) and you should be able to order it until sometime this October (I think)

I had to get another computer, too. I had my internet provider copy my files. Some old files will not work with the new ones,
My advice is to back your files before you decide to buy another computer.

Hi Bobbies41, I know all this can be SO frustrating! My only suggestion/thought is to buy a used Windows xp or 7 on Ebay. You can pick one up very cheap now. Use it only as a dedicated Embroidery computer. That way no virus or bad stuff can ever get to it and you will have it forever. My software also doesn't work on Windows 8. I have an XP and a 7 just for my program. I don't ever want to be without a computer to operate my embroidery, so that's why I have a backup to my backup LOL. Hope you can get it all straightened out. Keep us posted!! ***Flowers to all***

Has anyone been able to get Window 7 with 3D installed to "send" designs to their Husqvarna Designer machine using the cable and Send function in the software?

There is a yahoo group called 6D Embroidery and in their files is a patch to fix this problem. I know the name says 6D, but they will help with all levels of this software. Hugs. Nan W

I do understand your frustration with the new Windows 8, everyone I have talked to has said to stay far away from it. At the moment I have XP which no longer gets updates, but as you were telling Rescuer Windows 7 is no longer in the stores apparently once they get the new version in they sent the others back to Microsoft. The only option I have is to buy a 7 on ebay as I don't want 8.. Hope you can sort this out soon. Let us know..

I am not that unhappy with Windows 8, my embroidery software works well on it. The point is Husqvarna does not offer a new driver for the reader/writer, which is still necessary for some of the older machines.

Hope you managed to get this sorted out. It was for this reason (thanks to rescuer) that three weeks ago I went for Windows 7.

Yes, i have and contacted the Husqvarna help desk. It took them a long time to answer and tell me the reader/writer works with XP or Vista, not with newer computers (and not with 6 D either). And they are Not offering a new driver - which leaves me with an Iris that sews great, but can not be used to embroider except with the card it came with. And the embroideries that are on the blank card can't be viewed in the software.

I think it is a b.... shame and the worst customer service one could get.

I am fortunate to have a Ruby as well.

My dealer told me he no longer sells the reader/writer (it is still available!) as there are no updated drivers. I could not believe Husqvarna would be so careless and that's why I wrote them - both to the international helpline as well as to the Dutch and only the latter answered.
No support for older machines owners apparently.

gerryb by gerryb 10 May 2014

and did you hear back from Viking? One of the selling points of getting machines, softwear, etc was you could update & never have to buy again. Either my dealer or Viking was plain out lying!

Here is a site from someone who got 3d to work on vista, 7, and 8. He says he got his r/w to work, maybe you could contact him to ask?

what media do you use to get the designs to the machine? (I don't use a r/w box) USB or floppie? SewWhatPro will put designs in menus-if that' what your machine needs. My sister has a designer 1, and uses the floppies. We were at one of the big techie stores the other day to buy a modem for her, were looking at computers, and when I expressed my displeasure at windows 8 being crammed down our throats without thought that some of us have thousands of $ invested in software that won't work with 8, the salesman just left us! Guess he thought we didn't know what we were talking about. Had to get the modem ourselves. (I personally, would have gone to another store altogether, but she wanted to get it then.) All for a buck, and then the ones at the top can give money away and look good. sheesh.

jofrog2000 by jofrog2000 20 Apr 2014

I mean is a usb or floppy another choice to use.

bobbies41 by bobbies41 20 Apr 2014

I don't use a floppy....my system uses a r/w which is attached to usb in the tower ... the old computer is a Gateway purchased about 10 years ago and did not have the capacity to use the windows 8 so that is why I purchased the new comuter... I have a local friend whose husband was able to install windows 8 and go through 3-D Configure and Smart Update to get the drivers for the r/w box, but so far the Tech at
Office Depot has not been able to retrieve it using this method.

bobbies41 by bobbies41 20 Apr 2014

Thank you so much for the link to Joel Dare, I have printed out the entire thing and will take it down to the store tomorrow and see if they can get it to work on my new computer...They still have the computer because I will not pick it up unless everything works on it (especially the embroidery downloads). I picked up my old Gateway tower today so I could check emails and send out messages for help with this....Thank you so much for the link. I will post a message when we finally get it to work.

jofrog2000 by jofrog2000 21 Apr 2014

I meant what ways does the machine allow you to getdesigns to it. My Babylock Ellegante has a usb port and a slot for a card-which i have from my Brother machine.

jofrog2000 by jofrog2000 21 Apr 2014

Forgot to say I sure hope the link helps the geeks!

bobbies41 by bobbies41 22 Apr 2014

Yes my machine works that way also....usb port and a slot for a card.

I wonder why they did not test this before they had you buy Windows 8 I would have suggested Windows 7 Professional so you could use the XP virtual machine inside it. Sadly, Windows 8 does not have a solution I am aware of...
You can and should contact Viking to see if they will be doing a driver update compatible with Windows 8 -- if not -- it would be better for you to return the computer for one that will work for you.

The Windows 7 programs have been sent back to microsoft according to the Office Depot Tech, they did not have any in the store. I was also told about them being sent back by another friend ......

rescuer by rescuer 21 Apr 2014

Make them order a computer in Windows 7 for you. Tell them to set it up with the Virtual XP and insist they do it so the USB will work. There is a certain order that must be done to have the USB work. They CAN do this for you. You will just have to insist. If they won't do it -- send me a PM.

Thank you.....me too. I was going through computer withdrawal so I picked up my old tower today so I could catch up on my emails, etc......They have had it for about eleven days and I have not picked up the new computer......can't use it if they don't get it fixed to support my r/w box.
