I have been asked by my BIL to use a blanket that my niece had when she was a baby. My niece is expecting her first child in Sept (girl). My sister passed away from bone cancer from breast cancer in May 2012. As the material is 30 years old, I am concerned as to how to keep the material from tearing apart when I try to stitch a new backing onto the original.

I thought of adding a thin fleece to the back of the original material and then a batiste material on top. By using then materials, I thought I might be able to glue the fleece and then cut windows out of the batiste material so that the original material would show thru. The original material is not cotton, possible rayon.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I started a new thread July 23, with the pictures.

Here are 2 pictures of the material that is left from the original quilt/blanket. I must remove the shredded pieces that are left on one side. I believe the material to be polyester.
I'm sorry, but the pictures would not upload. I even tried resizing the pictures before trying to upload them, I will try another way later.

Hayley - could you post a picture of the original blanket as it might make it easier for suggestions. It is a lovely idea. Sarah

If I were concerned about the original fabric deteriorating, I may use a fusible interfacing on the back side and then do what ever you wish as far as the quilting. Good Luck, I look forward to seeing your completed project.

I would wash it, and all the fabrics being used. Then if possible put a piece of warm fabric, such as fleecy cotton as a backing and edge. The sort where the backing becomes the edge. Have a look on You Tube. Little bit of embroidery to say what it's about. Chances are the baby blanket will only be used for a very short time, then spend the next 30 years laying about in a cupboard somewhere!

If you decide to add new fabric to old I would wash the new incase it shrinks. What is the original fabric and what state is it in? If joining two pieces of fabric I would quilt them together or sew the fabrics together regularly but I wouldn't use glue. Good Luck

I have just remembered that my younger daughter has a baby blanket that was mine. She used it for her daughter, so its been around quite a number of years

I do not know what you mean by the glue, but I would not use fabric glue on it. This is just a suggestion as I have not seen the fabric but maybe if you put your backing face down on the original blanket and stitch it like a pillowslip with a small opening for turning. Turn it inside out, slip stitch the opening close and then pin it like a quilt and stitch around the edge and do like a scroll pattern or diamond pattern to fuse the two pieces together in the middle. Hope you find a way to do it. Hugs

Babsie's suggestion sound like a good one.

Try chiffon. It may mute face of blanket but you could still see design.

Baby won't be laying on that side of blanket. Fl.annel or fleece on other side.
