Bells Palsy

I just found out I have Bells Palsy. I wondered if any of you have had this and what your experience has been. I know it usually clears up in a few weeks/months but it can be permanent. I would appreciate any input from you. I'm not whining about it, I am just looking for info from people who have had it. Thanks in advance! Cathy
P.S. This is what Nancy Zeiman has that causes her face to droop on one side, she has had it since she was one.

My brother also has it and he is regaining his speech and facial expression on the right side again. They gave him no medication. But I am sure you will get better soon. Be strong and have a lot of rest as well as keeping warm. XOXOXO.

Yes I had a bout with it, when I was in my 30s. It was scary. I was working & my spvr. told me "you need to look in a mirror and then go to the Dr." I did and that was the diagnosis, My rt. eye would not shut so they taped the eye lid down to keep eye from drying out. There is still a little difference in my right side of the face from the left but I only notice in some photos. It took about 6 weeks, They gave me no drugs said it would get better in time.. They suggested I get a hand held massager and keep using it on the drooping side. We purchased a hand held Oster Massager that fit your hand ( I still have it) there was no pain, looked as though I had had a stroke on that side and as I said it mostly went away. and that was more than 40 yrs. ago. I'm sure they know a lot more about it these days.. Lillian

Yes, now they have medicine to use but they say it may or may not work. We'll see. Thank you for sharing your experience with me. Cathy

My husband had it 30 yrs ago. Has had a slight droop until he had eyelid surgery about 10 yrs ago. Dr. lasered under the eyes. Now seems to droop again and will have another surgery on Thursday. He does have feeling in the face. Really, his droop is not bad. When first happened he did feel numbness. Good luck and be patient you should be fine. Hugs to you, Suzanna

Thank you so much. I'm optimistic but I guess it will be what it is.

My daughter has had Bell's Palsy three times in her life so far. The first time she was only 12: skipped off to the pond, came back 5 mins later and her face had drooped. I thought she'd had a stroke because that's what she looked like. The doctor gave her some tablets (forget what they were) and it took about a month for her to heal... totally normal again. (Although the last week was painful as the nerves fired all over the place while "waking up".)

It struck the other side of her face three years later, took about a month to return to normal. Again three years later on the original side.. BUT this time she felt the familiar tingling before the numbness and we had her at the doctor before the paralysis set in. (last time was last year and she's now 20yrs old).

In her case it's usually the nerve behind her ear, where it passes through the little channel in her jaw (I think?) that becomes inflamed and swells, causing the whole side of her face to droop. Usually in winter and because one side of her face suddenly got really cold. eg: driving with the window down in winter - that ear will get cold fast, and then the nerve swells.

Despite having it three times in her life, there's no guarantee that she'll get it again - or that she won't. However the first time was the worst - she couldn't blink properly so her eye watered, and her droopy mouth meant that she drooled and couldn't speak properly.

So.. chin up, Cathy. :) Our doctor says in most cases it's temporary and hopefully is the case with you too <3 xXx

Thank you for the wonderful information! That is too bad she has had it so many times, I hope that was her last. I'm not too concerned yet, will take the meds and see how it goes. People go thru worse, for sure.
Thanks again,
Cathy

I hope that also! I sure wouldn't want this forever, but worse things can happen.

My gardening friend from 15 years ago had Bells Palsy and it went away gradually after about 4 months. I hope this happens for you.

My aunt has had it 2 times and she goes to an acupuncturist who really made a difference. She had become unable to sing with the Bell's palsy, but after several visits to a certified acupuncturist, she was able to sing again.

Thank you, I've never been to one. I may try that if it doesn't come back ok.

I know some people who have it and some of them were able to recover from it. Husband friend did occupuncture and his face is back to normal now. It all depend on how bad it is. I see some people who are drooling and even their eyes were affected. There are some simple excercise you can do on your own like blowing candle, sewing gum in the affected side , massaging your face with warm face towel to have a good circulation. I'll praying that you'll feel better .
