Such a very long day but managed to make some Marmalade my first time too then hubby tried it & said YUK! after all that work & it is a very labour intensive process ( I understand why it is expensive to buy) it was too bitter. So thanks to capoodle Anita I did the whole thing all over again & was able to save the batch & now it is YUMMY! I am not much a of a fan of Marmalade but this is good now! there are 4 full jars for Christmas gift giving & now I have a leftover one that Hubby says he will keep that for himself! I added 1 & 1/2 cups more sugar to the batch so an easy save but very time consuming!

Looks absolutely yummy! Marmalade is one of my favorites though I do not get it very often. Would you mind sending me the recipe you used?
The recipients at Christmas will be very happy! I just love seeing fresh canned products all lined up cooling on the counters.

I am glad you have good luck using non canning jars. My, my if my home economist saw this she would have a tizzy. I have only used caning jars and lids no matter what I make. I love marmalade... I can almost smell it way over here. Hugs..Carol

well I like to upcycle wherever I can & this is as good a place as any. I would love to see what you can too Carol. I need some sneaky good ideas to make some more this holiday! ~hugs~

caroldann by caroldann 11 Aug 2014

Well, I can salsa, tomato sauce, apple sauce ( cause I have 8 apple trees), strawberry jam fresh from my patch, bread and butter pickles...Blackberry, blueberry, and raspberry jam. Oh ya, my most favorite in the whole wide world...apple butter. I have been canning for over 40 years. Hugs..Carol

bevintex by bevintex 11 Aug 2014

here is why it may not be a good idea-
Most of them are made of thin glass and are not heat tempered, as regular home canning jars. They may not withstand the high pressure of canning and break. When you open the canner, the jars may still be under pressure. The quick drop in temperature could cause the recycled jar to explode
Please be careful

Nice save and nice batch of marmalade. I made some redcurrant jelly. And used old jars - with new lids.

One of my neighbours is saving jars - apparently she always buys the same brand. I got 30 from her this year and used them all.

I have two recipes I make using marmalade, muffins and a quick bread. Both are excellent. These would work well in them.

I ALWAYS RECYCLE JARS WHEN EVER I CAN LUCY. I HAVE NOT EVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH THEM AS LONG AS THE RUBBER ON THE LID IS FIRM & IN GOOD SHAPE & THE JARS ARE FREE FROM NICKS I WILL USE THEM. WHEN THE JAM (OR WHATEVER) HAS SETTLED 24HRS LATER & THEY HAVE ALL SEALED THEN THEY SHOULD BE FINE & IF THEY HAVE NOT SEALED THEN THEY CAN BE REFRIDGERATED TO EAT RIGHT AWAY INSTEAD OF STORING THEM TILL NEEDED. I HOPE THAT THIS HELPS LUCY & THANK YOU ~HUGS~

Glad you were able to save it Loralye-I LOVE orange marmalade, but no one else in this house cares for it, so I just buy it in the grocery store-one jar lasts a long time. I respect anyone that cans-I hate doing it-although I am going to have to soon-our tomatoes are starting to get ready to ripen- and we are going to have a lot all at once- roma's, big boys, patio and one other kind-can't remember. Plus cucumbers and peppers are all coming at once too.

yum yum my are not ready yet but getting close & I love doing up the tomatoes into sauces & roma's I find are the best for pasta sauces to thicken YUMMY! I have planted squash to make soups this fall too. I have also done cuc's & we are eating them now but no peppers not a fan of them but good in cooking! Looking forward to seeing yours too. ~hugs~

oh pickles yummy I think our youngest is doing pickles this year for our Christmas baskets & she did blueberry jams too. We (me & our girls) have a competition @ Christmas now to see what new & interesting things we can do up in jars. Last year the youngest won with her apple pie jam in a jar! OMG it was soooo good! This year they are not sharing anything with me yet but hubby did find out about the blueberry jams....it will be a yummy holiday around here lol ! ~thanks Kay very much > ~hugs~

Try some on your ham sandwich!

The best marmalades are British, as they are much lower in sugar than American made and more concentrated in fruits (oranges, but can also be grapefruit or other citruses). So, another good reason to make your own - you find the lowest level of .sugar you will enjoy!
