If you bought the machine new 4 years ago I would be contacting Brother. many of us here have Brother machines and it is very, very unusual to read of problems with Brother machines. Many have had machines for years and not had the bother you are having. If it were something that was cheap maybe but Brother machines are not cheap. So the advice from this Cutie who has 2 Brother machines is to contact Brother and say that there is a problem and how can they help. Good Luck and do let us know what happens
Here is a cute set on sewforum.com that looks like they do not have outlines - while there look for more of her designs as they are very nice and do not seem to have outlines. You will have to join sewforum but it is free to do so. One you join or sign into sewforum then come back here and click the link I have given and it will take you to the cute under the sea designs. I hope they will work for you!

If you have a newer Brother machine, and it is giving you grief, don't let the dust settle between complaints. Let them know that you are not happy and don't give up! I have had an abundance of grief with my machine. I think they finally got it fixed after I sent it in for repair dozens upon dozens of times, literally! And don't let them tell you that it is you doing something wrong. Good luck!!
If you contact Brother directly, perhaps via e-mail and send a photo of a problem design...they may know exactly what the problem is...they may be able to contact your technician and advise him how to fix the problem, or send him the part to replace in your machine...explain to them that you are in the "boonies" and it is difficult for you to get to another technician...there should be a contact number for them in the manual that came with your machine...go to their website where you can contact their Technical Support staff or their Customer Relations staff...

I posted this as a comment below, but wanted to add it as a new post to make sure you saw it.... :)
If the problem just with the in-built designs, then it does sound like the inbuilt software on your machine is faulty or has somehow been corrupted and, considering you have always had this problem with this young machine, I too would suggest that you contact Brother directly - they have a reputation to uphold and should want to remedy this for you; I doubt that the problem is "cannot be fixed" and suspect it is more a case of your local technician not knowing how. If you have always taken good care of your machine and not subjected it to any power surges and Brother won't either repair or replace your machine, then I think you next step would be to contact Consumer Affairs or Fair Trade Australia.
If you love Disney, I've been told that some Brother dealers sell CDs of Brother designs including Disney in their shops, but they are usually fairly expensive.
I am also not a great lover of outlines, so if they are not features on faces etc I usually do not put them in. I find that lowering the speed of my machine sometimes helps with outlines.
many thanks for your comments. The biggest problem is with the built in ones which is Disney and the main reason I bought the machine, I have tried out some other designs I have bought from suppliers over the years and they are much better, guess I will have to forget Disney.
I think most of EmbLibrary designs have no outlines and they have so many for children. But if I like a design without the outline...I just skip it.
thanks for your advice. I like EmbLibrary designs so I will have a look. With the inbuilt Brother designs the outlines are essential as they form part of the features, but your suggestion omitting the outline sounds good..
Have you tried to skip the outline color and not embroider it?
I do think however that this should not happen after 4 years and agree with the previous comments about contacting Brother directly.
Yes, but the outline is so much part of the design, such as eyes, hands etc.and it doesnt work. Many thanks
Don't settle for this answer, it doesn't sound right. I think Brother would want and need to know about this failure, especially since it sews others alright and it's Brothers signature designs with the problem! If it's part of the computer/motherboard...it can be usually be fixed, replaced. Think of contacting Brother via the net; if you can upload them a sample of the problem...look at it as getting a second opinion for the good of your patient! :-} just my thoughts.
I appreciate your thoughts and agree with you entirely. I live in outback Australia where I am very limited to technicians and the cost to get it to them.
Hmmm...what does Brother say??? Sounds like a computer board problem, and if only four years old, this should be under warranty still...I would contact Brother directly...has it been back to the factory for repair...has your tech actually called the Brother tech department...I would want a lot more answers! Your machine is not old enough to be throwing in the towel and settling for poor quality of the designs...just my two cents...
I will consider contacting Brother, I live in outback Australia where I am very limited to technicians but my Son lives in the City and if I can get it to him he will take it further. As a senior I do not drive far now so packing it up securely may be a problem. Many thanks for your concerns.

Try loosening you tension, I find I have to do this with some of the free designs that have outlines and it seems to work. Happy stitching,
Maureen
That sounds so frustrating -I feel for you! Is the problem really that it won't do satin stitch as normally that is what an outline is? In that case is it a problem if there is satin stitch anywhere in the design? I guess you could do designs that are linework, colourwork or redwork, if the problem is between fill and lines. There may be designs where you could just skip the outlines. Best of luck!
Thanks for replying. It is the outlining on the built in designs, they are way off and looks terrible. I have tried today to do designs (not built ins) without outlines and they look good. It is just a matter of finding such designs but I will keep on looking. Embroidery Ocean and Buttercup are two sites that have designs suitable for me but not always suitable designs for babies.
many thanks
