My dad has given me these beautiful jars that belonged to my gramma & they are quite old. I even have a very tall green one but my question is this.............Can you see the glass lid how can this make a seal glass to glass? Am I missing something because I can't seem to figure this out

I had some of these from my granny and was able to get new rubber rings for them. That was eons ago when I was still living in California. I only used them once and then just kept them as a memory of my granny. I guess I just didn't want anything to happen to them...Hugs...Carol

When i use mine or my peaches i was always told to overflow the jars a little and this made them seal .An it works!!!
Some of mine allowed you to use the new rubber rings instead .Check it out and see if one fits.If the jars din't seal i reheated them in the microwave .Saved time and it works .Have fun hugs

wow I would have never thought of the microwave. Funny thing is I have been shown to fill about 1/4" from the tops & not to overfill them ?????????????? oh well whatever works right

You can always use a parafin wax seal if you can not find the rubber rinds. I think you will do fine.

I have heard that this is not a good idea anymore to use the wax? I think I would be too nervous to try this

caroldann by caroldann 26 Aug 2014

No, no, please don't use parafin wax. Bacteria can still get in and ruin all your hard work.

Loralye - if you go to Canadian Tire you can get the rubber rings. They come in a box of about 12. You sterilize the jar, the glass lid, the metal ring and the rubber ring. When you make jam or anything in these you put the jam in - quickly wipe the top with a danp cloith and put on the rubber ring on the glass top and put that on the jar and then put the metal ring on. Do not dry anything - the dampness somehow helps to seal it. You tighten it and then back it off a 1/4 turn and when it has cooled completely, then tighten.
I still use these and some of them I use the metal tops that have the rubber ring stuck to the lid.
As you are in Canada - you might have a Peavey Mart close and they also carry the rubber rings.
Good luck.

The rubber rings were probably worn out and that's why they don't have any.

Back in the days when y ou sterilized everything that went in a new born's mouth I had a lot of those. I would sterilize the jar and keep sterile nipples and covers in them and use sterile tongs to reach in and get one out for ea. sterile bottle of sterile formula. A lot of work back then. Always had the rubber gaskets that you had to boil to sterilize also. This really brought back memories. Young people today have no idea what it was like. LOL. They are so fortunate. For inquiring minds/ I was unable to breastfeed. Lillian/AKAlbrow

Here is a glass canister that I have. You can see the rubber gasket that effects the seal. Yours should work similarly, except the metal ring seems to screw down over the glass lid. If you can't find rubber gaskets to fit, they sell sheets of rubber gasket material in some auto parts stores and you could cut your own.

You must have two things, a rubber ring between the jar and the lid and a clip which holds this together during you are cooking the jam or what ever in a pot with water in it. Years ago my mother did this.
This is not for filling the hot jam and close it after, the food will be cooked in the jar!

I worder if the glass top was used after the jar had been opened? Some of these old jars sealed with a rubber ring and a one piece screw on cover but that wouldn't work with this glass cover.Anyone else have a better answer?

After I looked at this again I saw that there is a ring that would hold the glass cover on but you still need the rubber ring that goes in between.

When I use bottles like these there is usually a rubber ring that goes between the jar and the lid.

Those jars need rubber rings for the seal. In Europe they are still available, either new as a complete item or spare rings by the dozen. However, some sizes of the older ones might be hard to find.
