this question is for the cuties who crochet: I have this chunky chenille type yarn (7 large balls) & would like to make an afghan I started with this granny square but the yarn is to thick for this so I am wondering what you could suggest for me to do instead baring in my mind that I am a newbie & don't know many stitches. I seem to remember something that starts with a T but have not had any luck remembering or finding it on line either. Any help would be appreciated.

I just received a flyer in today's mail about a craft store closing so I will see if I can find a bigger hook. SO you think that I need to get a Q or a P? does that sound right?

You can still make granny squares, you just need a larger hook. Try the biggest one you can find. Crocheters... would that be a Q?

ok thanks I will have to go see what I can find the blue one here is an H so the Q must be quite a bit bigger. ~hugs~

If the pic is done with an H, you might just want to go up few sizes to J or K, Q may be too big and loose. Also depends on how warm you'd like your blanket - in the pic, it's still nice and flat so you'd end up with a REALLY warm blanket if you kept going the way you are. The looser the weave, the less warm the blanket (and the easier it would be to snag on things). I think J or K should work. Usually the yarn has sample designs or says a hook size and needle size somewhere on it's paper wrap as well.

I agree with gjemptynester. You might try to find a pattern with a looser stitch, but you would still need a larger hook. Red Heart has lots of free patterns online. And they make searching easy with a series of multiple choice options. Good luck!

Try a larger hook...yes, the squares will be larger, giving you 3 options: 1) you don't have to make as many squares; 2) leave off the last row so the square will be closer to the original pattern size; or 3) you get a bigger afghan.

why not make one of arm knitting scarves or a couple. I bet that would be warm when the cold snow and wind blow up there in Canada
