Ironing Board Cover (elastic attached with serger)

I bought some white napkins planning to use for the cutwork font I bought and washed them. Before I iron them, I have to replace my old dirty/burnt/sticky ironing board cover or the white napkins would be a mess (you can see how bad it it from the last pic).

I read the tutorial on sew4home and decided I didn't want to make a casing. I wanted to use my serger's elastic foot to attach elastics instead.

Normally it'd be easier to make a casing for ties, but with the elastic foot, attaching 1/4 inch elastics is so fast and enjoyable! I made 5 crib sheets and 1 playpen sheet and 2 bassinet sheets with it so quickly 2 years ago and I am eager for more projects using it.

It took me 5 minutes to find the instructions for the foot (it's been a while) and 1 minute to set up the machine, and literally 1 minute to finish sewing the elastics on! You can see from the last two pictures how it looks.

I sewed the two fabrics on with my SM and added the decorative stitches from the machine. The plaid fabric is heavy weight cotton home deco fabric and the red is cotton/linen. They are about the same weight and really look cute together!

I programmed the scissors, needle and thread as a repeating pattern. I had to add quilting stitches on both sides of the scissors as the pattern did not have the curvy lines before and after it. (Second Picture)

Decided not to add embroidery (thought about adding "Lucia's Sewing Room"on the red band) because the cover should be smooth.

It's not snug enough. It looks great from the top but not from the side. It will work just fine.

I think after several washes, if it's still not snug enough, I might redo the elastics, cutting off more fabric and tightening the screw so it gathers even more.

For those who want to try this with your serger, I recommend only adding 3 inches (instead of 5 and 1/2 inches to your pattern) and use the tightest setting for your elastic foot.

Great Job! I am ready to make a new one too... Have you seen those little clips that attach under the board, from side to side of the cover to keep the cover tighter? I saw some on Amazon. Thought about trying them too. I will have to do a casing, I don't have a serger, but sure love your idea!

Thank you! I haven't seen those clips and don't think I need them. I'll know more when I use the ironing board more.

A job well done! My Serger is over 10yrs old so don't know how I'd do this..

What a great job! I bought a used 910 serger and haven't had time to sit down to figure it out yet. I am inspired!

Wow, sounds great to use your serger. I have a really old one that didn't come with any additional feet but it would be a nice feature to have!

Looks great - I have always made my ironing board covers but with the elastic encased. I think you have a great idea using the serger. I also have several different covers (for different jobs) as I use my ironing board so much - even cut out on it!!!!

Thank you for the link. I have made my own in the past, with a casing and am getting ready to make another one.
Just a hint: If you put tin foil under your fabric, you press both sides at the same time...

Excellent. I made a cover for mine with lots of batting underneath and a separate cover, now I have to redo them, and I think I want to use your method. Thanks

Thank you! I didn't make any batting. I just put the new one over the old one.

Try it! It's so fast and easy. As we don't need a casing, we don't need that much fabric. The more fabric, the more we need to gather. I only added 4 inches to my trace-out, but it's still too much, I think.

Beautiful work and a good idea to use a serger's elastic foot to attach elastics : I never tried to use it, but when I see your work i think I will try soon. Thank you for sharing and amitiés de France.

This is great! However it will take much more for me, than a pretty ironing board cover to convince me to iron....:-D Very nice thanks for the link. ;-)

I've said it for 58 years: An iron is a tailoring tool. You use it to press seams open, to press darts down, and then you put it away!

This one "hint" has added years to my life.
