The purpose of a heavy weight denim needle is to punch through multi-layers of denim when stitching without breaking the needle. Because with embroidery, only one layer of denim is being stitched, an 80/12 sharp needle should do the trick.
this was asked and i belive the verdict came back that some folk do and some folk don.t but as the denim is thicker than the normal cotton fabric that we tend to use then the heavier and stronger denim needle is recomended
I didn't even know there was an denim needle. But I am the person who uses the same needle for everything and don't change it unless it breaks. I also don't use stabilizer on denim.

Ideally, Denim needle...especially for a large project...but 80/12 in a pinch would do the trick!
I sew on denim quite a bit but have never thought of using a 'denim' needle. Thank you Loralye
I have never embroidered on denim but once and had excellent results. I think I used an 80 titanium, but I suppose a denim needle would have been better. I think the stabilizer is as important as to use enough to adjust the pull compensation. This was on the back of a jeans vest not hitting any seams. Kay
ok ladies thank you all so very much! Denim needle it is. I am planning a Denim Quilt for Christmas so I hope to do quite a number of embroidery blocks so this is a need to know project. I appreciate cuties so very much! ~hugs~
And....the winner is: denim! Now if I can just remember that!! Good question!
I've used both, but the denim was much more pleasant. ;)
I would also use a denim needle as they are stronger. Hugs Shirley
I allways use a denim needle as they are made stronger than the normal ones
Denim is a lot thicker than normal cotton fabric so need that extra umph to get through easily.
You ask some really good questions which I know help heaps of us. Thank you
I have used my regular needles that are on my embroidery machine.
