It is officially called a disappearing 9 patch block. It gets that name from sewing a 9 patch together, then cutting in half horizontally, and then vertically. You then move it around to what you like.
Toogie what I like is that you take the block to another whole new level.
You have a mind that thinks outside of the box. Way to go.
Toogie, it's very pretty and a bit sophisticated, just right for nine years old. If it took only an hour, make #2! Would be cool in solids in loud colors for a different look for Avery.
Nice placement!! Nice job sis and nice bib!! Great job!! Suzanne
Looks great, thanks for the explanation!
I thought it was so simple this way, not like the ways our grandmothers had to do, I just had to show the ones that may not have known. So much easier this way.
You have mastered fabric piecing very well, love the colours used. Avery will be the smartest dressed girl at school dressed in this.. Marian
Aw, thanks Marian. I've had these fabrics for a while so I was glad to put them to use here.
love your color layout, pretty way for D9P you are a quilter already. the bib is beautiful. if you ask your searchengine for "calculation yardage d9p queensize" it should lead you to some good maths done for D9P glad that your sister gave you some "homework" to do it is a A+,
Love this method, I would like to make myself a blouse this way with the patchwork on the front . Make up the blocks then cut out
I thought a jacket would be nice, to quilt it,cut out and bind the sleeve, hem, opening. Talk about a coat of many colors!
Toogie this is great and what a super idea for a bib as it is so colourful marks will not show. I am sure that Avery will love it. Well done
Thank you Sarah, just fabric I have been having, but cut some sqs from. I couldn't wait to try this Disappearing 9 patch out on something. I hope dragonflyer tells us how to do her disappearing pinwheel. I'm looking forward to seeing her quilt. I hope the twins have a great party!-Toogie
Wow this is GREAT .. You have done a fantastic job.. Be ready to take orders :))
excellent job Toogie she should ware it in pride"My Grammie made this"hugs Carolyn
You have done a good job .Thanks for the info .I was wondering how you cut it out
Now you get this hung up in your head like me! haha! I imagined over and over how to do it, what fabrics to use, etc.Thank you for stopping in to look.-Toogie
Great job on this bib, Toogie! Avery will look fantastic wearing it...I see you have the answer as to what the block is called...I love doing these types of "magic" blocks...I am working on a quilt now called the Disappearing Pinwheel...I am almost done with it!
I can't wait to see it! I am learning more about piecing blocks 'the easy way', not like our grandmothers did it. I think that's why I wasn't so interested. I don't like cutting little pieces, one by one, like she did. My back hurts too much and poor Momo had a hump in hers.
Toogie, here is a link to a fabric calculator for quilts.
Love your Disappearing 9 patch bib.
Thanks, I'll check it out. You all are so helpful, but you shouldn't encourage me.... until after christmas-lol-What's a girl to do, but drop everything and quilt! ..Thanks about her bib. It looks ok for school? not like Dolly's"Coat of Many Colors, that my mamma made for me"?
Lovely bib, much nicer than just a plain one. I love the colours in it, very pretty.
These were squares I had left from Nora's quilt. We ended up not using these colors, so as I had the sqs cut, I wanted to try this for a bib.
How very nice, just might use this idea lovely
That's why we post things here, to encourage others. Go for it and please show your work.
It's the "Disappearing 9 patch" pattern. You made a great bib with it, very pleasing usage of it.
On this site, scroll way down to the bottom, the small red letters are pages of info and oodles of patterns and help.
Jo
Oh Jo, I'm afraid to look...I won't get anything, I need to do, done! I really do thank you. I have so much I need to do, before christmas, but I want to work on another quilt.
I need to make some more bibs, so I'll save this link for now...maybe just a peek....lol
And then you need to go to utube and, boy will you see LOTS of stuff there. Missouri Quilting Company has many tutorials that are so great to watch. I am constantly learning new ways to do things.
Jo, you are a bad influence on me-lol- I don't need to get started right now, as much as I would like to. My trouble is matching fabrics/colors/prints to buy, when it comes to a lot of different colors.
Now that's MY problem-I'm great at putting fabrics together, which is why I have such a large stash of material. Either things are waiting, or I have leftovers! When I started making pillowcases I was happy to use some up. And I can do the matchy thing because I do the 3 part ones with the cuff, band, and body.
I know the pattern as "lost nine-patch" and love the results. Your use of it makes the bib extra special. And I bet everyone who sees it will love it too.
it is called Disappearing Nine Patch - there are many variatons - lovely to use up your scraps
Great result! Thanks also for the pictures, I am only a beginner and have only just discovered the wealth of "shortcuts to piecing" that are out there.
I know Sue, what you mean. If my grandmother would be alive today, she would be amazed at rotary cutters and such.-lol
That bib is SOOOOOOO cute---is there a pattern that can be purchased like the one you used---it looks like it would be so good for little ones---I make bibs out of wash cloths-have a template I cut out the neck--and use bias tape around the neck for ties--but this looks like it would be another cool and useful things to make for new moms and grandmoms---would love to know where the pattern can be found--free or purchase would be great. Thanks and God bless you.
Hi you know what I have been doing? We started with a already made bib. Traced a pattern around the one we liked, adding seam allowances. As Avery grows, I just increase the homemade pattern. This pattern I use now, wouldn't fit most children,as Avery is almost nine years old.She is special needs and drools, that's why the bibs. Google 'baby bib patterns' ,and I am sure I got a baby bib pattern free, off the net one time. Good luck and thanks for looking.
You are so fortunate to have such a grand child---I teach music to children in the middle school about twice a month---they are so special in my heart---they have and show love that others who do not and have not worked with them will never experience--I do it voluntarily and love every minute of the "WORK." GOD bless you.
This must be so rewarding for you. I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Avery loves her music, as do most. We do count ourselves blest to have her. May God bless you as well.-Toogie
This is beautiful bib for Avery to wear to school, or anywhere. I especially like the daisy & darker blue prints. This would be cute with a white A on the darker blue diamond block.
Hey! I haven't heard from you in quite a while. How are you?.. Yes,an A would have looked nice, I guess I was too anxious to put it together, to emb anything, lol.
I honestly love it! Our youngest grand is a drooler & goes thru several bibs a day! I've been making them with that Pul material on the back, which works well.
By the way, I have done that using only 3 colors also & I really like it with just 3 colors.
Thanks for telling me this. Can you also tell me, how do you figure the amount of fabric it would take, of each color, to make a queen size quilt?
Also, I use Baby Dry on the back. It is like flannel soft on one side and rubberery on the other. Avery has CP and drools a lot.
