I use regular Organ needles for both sewing and embroidery. Keep a supply available of #11 and #12 in both sharp and ball point which are perfect for most sewing/embroidery projects (the higher the number, the sturdier the needle). Use the sharp needles for woven fabrics and the ball point for knits or stretchy fabrics.

Since most of us have combination sewing/embroidery machines, you can't say that machine needles cannot be used on the machine, just not for embroidering.
Embroidery needles have larger eyes to allow the thread to pass through easily, and close up, are structurally different.
I use size 11 or 12 most of the time for designs, a 14 if I am doing machine quilting or an in the hoop design that goes through more layers. Also , most is done with a sharp point, but for knits, such as t shirts, use a ball point needle, as it does not cut the threads of the shirt. Google for more information, it's out there. Good luck.

Here are some links to old posts from other users asking the same or similar question. Some of the users are no longer here -- so you may not get an answer from them if you ask. If you do have questions it would be best to make a new comment here in your post and any that can answer -- will.

Welcome to cute, I change my needles often so I will sometimes put a used an embroidery needle in my sewing machine it is still sharp enough to use, but there is a difference between needles: emb has a larger eye and are generally around a 16 jeans needle and these would be stronger to take the speed in which it is used, machine needles are made to sew different thickness materials shouldn't be used in a embroidery machine.. hope this helps a little and not just confused you more..
