I have a question about fsl (well any design fits this question too) Lets say you are doing a fsl design that has 4 colours & you want to sew 4 of them Do you sew them with just 4 colours or do you stitch them one at a time? What I mean is if there are 4 colours say red white blue & black then you do 4 designs of the same thing do you join all the same colours together like all the reds stitch first then all the whites stitch next & so on or do you do each design by itself & do the 4 thread colour changes for each design so 16? I hope that this makes some sense?

Yes, Loralye, I do combine colors when stitching out more than one thing at a time.......sure saves time..........

On your Bravo as well? Unless it's FSL where I have to change the bobbin I don't colour sort on my multi-needle as the chance of misalignment is smaller when completing each design before going to the next.

I use my embird and sort the colors and sew a whole bunch at once. I sew a color - clean up the threads on the back - then sew the next color, etc.

Thank you pldc and to every one who replied to this question. I was, yesterday, showing my daughter my very first attempt at FSL and she asked me the same question - (she does not have an embroidery machine, maybe she was sounding me out to make some FSL for her!) and I was unable to answer - now I can go back to her with some answers. If your ears burn it's because I am singing your praises.

Many Many Thanks

Ok wow I didn't know you could do that, is this a digitizing thing or can it be done with a ready digitized design.. I only have My Editor can this do it?

I don't have this program so maybe you could ask & see if some else has this & can do this. In a new thread. ~hugs~

You can usually sort your colours in an editing or customising program, I think My Editor would have a colour sort feature as well.

Although they recommend to use the smallest hoop for FSL I often use my largest hoop and do as many designs as I can get in. My machine can't colour sort, so I use my software to arrange the designs in the hoop and sort the olours. And use an extra layer of stabiliser to make sure the background is as stable as possible. And I always do a single one first to test the design.
The same applies to small ITH designs, like a number of finger puppets or badges in one large hoop.

I too agree, what ever designs I'll combine in my 6x10 hoop I will play around so that all of one color is done before going on to the next color. I will even 'direct' the jump stitches around so that they are not caught in any of the other designs or colors and I can leave the machine without worry.

I make the patches for the Boys & Girls at my Church, and there is usually 6 patches on a hoop. I put all the same color & sew all 6 of each color then go on to the next color. I have 4-D software, and I can change the colors the way I want them, so I put all 6 blues, then all 6 reds, & so on. makes it a lot easier and a lot quicker to get done. When last color sews out, all 6 are done! Hugs, Judy

I like when doing two or three designs in one hoop to sew all one colour first then the next and so on. It saves colour changes.

Hi Lor...If I am doing the same design several times in the same hoop...I will always color sort the designs so that all of "Color #1" will sew all of the designs first...then all of Color #2...I do not sew one complete design changing colors within the one single design and then move to the next design in the hoop..too many color changes...So if it is a 3" x 3" design...I duplicate it as many times as will fit in the hoop I am using..then I sort the colors...4 colors in one design...four color changes in the entire hoop of designs....I hope this is what you are asking...

yes that is exactly it & that is the way I am doing it but the threads on the back side are not as neat as I would have liked on the fsl? So I thought better check to make sure. Thanks Kim ~hugs **~

I stitch a lot of FSL. I follow the color change chart. And, for FSL I use the same thread in the bobbin as in the top.

dragonflyer by dragonflyer edited 23 Nov 2014

Yes, I do too, I always use the same color in the bobbin for FSL..and Lor...you might even want to trim the threads in between color changes...Sew all designs with Color #1...take out hoop and trim ends...Sew Color #2...etc...it's a bit more work, but would make the back look much neater..

dino by dino 23 Nov 2014

I agree. I hope these hints will help to turn out lovely FSL designs.

pldc by pldc 23 Nov 2014

doesn't matter it was not a very good design & they have all fallen apart sigh..................

mrskiki by mrskiki 24 Nov 2014

To make the back neater just must take the hoop off and snip the jump threads after each color. Not a problem since you are changing bobbin thread color with each color change! Hugs. Nan
