I do not want to be negative in any sense, but my sweetie's granddaughter expressed interest in sewing several years ago and I helped him select an excellent starter machine for her as I was thrilled for I could never get my own daughter to sew. To my sad discovery the child was using the machine as a night light in her bed room. I say , give her some time and see what develops! Make a decision later, Kay

I have had only Brothers---SE400 is a good started machine that sews AND embroiders--4x4---I got one from Overstock.com at a decent price---and sometimes you can get coupons and get them for around $250. I have one that I use for travel. Not a real high tech, but for travel and for beginners I have found it is a great LITTLE machine. Good luck with whatever brand you choose. She will love it!!! And you are a WONDERFUL CUTIE!!!!!!

If she already has a sewing machine, go with a Janome 350. This has both a 4 X 4 hoop and also the 5 X7 hoop. It is a very easy machine to learn, It is embroidery only, Bernina also has one and I think it is one of their deco machines but I do know that it is made by Janome and it is basically the same machine as the Janome. Check with your dealers, you may find a good deal on a used one.

You are a loving Grandmother, my hat is off to you for getting this girl a machine. I am not sure which one to suggest, will leave that up to another cute with more knowledge on a good starting embroidery machine. Hugs to you, Lynn

This is tough. From experience I know that the 4x4 frame is not going to do it in the long run if she likes the craft . How about checking into a used machine. Then of course there are all the other things one needs like stabilizer and thread of course. Good luck with it. She is a lucky lady to have a grandma like you.
