TIP

I decided to make a cot quilt for my new neighbours baby (Yes the one i made the baby bunting for ).
While driving to get some nice baby type fabric for it today i was thinking of how it could be used now as the little one is still too tiny to go into a cot, when i got an idea.
Make the quilt as normal but then hand sew three tabs down one short side with hook and loop on then put coresponding hook and loop onto short tabs on the opposite side, but again sewn by hand, about six inches from the edge so that the one side overlaps the other and is fastened . Then on the folded over long edge (That would end up being the bottom for a short while ) add two hand sewn tabs as above to just keep
Hope you are with me so far.
The baby can be placed onto the quilt and then it is folded over (not the baby but the quilt) and held in place by the hook and loop tabs. The bottom is closed in the same way. Now baby is snuggled into a sleeping bag.
Once he has grown too big for the sleeping bag the stitching on the tabs can be unpicked and removed with ease as its hand stitched and finally the quilt opened out to go over the top of the baby as a normal cot quilt.
Your comments on this idea are welcome. I am going to use the method shown for the six hour quilt useing the serger so it should be a nice fast one and completed by the weekend.
I will photo and show the results as soon as its done.
I allways try to reply to any comments left so check back if you have asked a Q
annie.

This sounds a great idea to keep the little baby as warm as toast. Please post when finished

Annie this is a great idea. I will remember where I saw it first. I think it is always awesome when something can be used longer rather then the short time a baby fits into things. You are so creative.

Hopefully i will be able to enlarge it in a couple of years time to fit a bed. That is if its still in one piece.
i spent time this evening cutting out strips 5.5 wide and they willo be going onto the serger tomorrow

This is a great idea, it seems to resemble the sleep sacks I've seen but is more adaptable and could be used as a mat when visiting net door,hehehe...anxiously waiting for pics. Glad you didn't decide to fold the baby into the sack ...

I love making things that are a little different to the norm as they then become originals and who knows some one may read this and next year put it into production and make millions, Just remember you saw it here first.

Actually what you said about it being a play mat as well is a wonderfull idea. I see the Craft Angel had been to visit you as well
Thank you for your idea.

I don't think it is a good idea to bring baby to visit me at the momment as the whole living room is covered in sewing that needs to be completed but who knows what the future may bring.

Miss Annie, I'm so glad you told us the baby wouldn't be folded over inside, although that was such a clever idea in itself. (I liked that image) I think you've come up with a very clever idea, this way the blanket grows with the young one and is useful over a long period of time. The quilt can be washed as needed and functionality is increased. Am anxious to see your wonderful creation.

I love it when the Craft Angel plants ideas into my mind and then stands back and watches them grow into fruition.
I thought i had better let folk know that the baby was not to be folded.
It reminded me of the washign instructions i had with a dog bed. Remove dog from bed and then wash on cool setting. Still wondering if its the dog or the bed that is washed on cool setting.

I'm always amazed at how explicit some instructions are, it's just common sense but that is lacking at times.
You could also fold the baby in it add a handle and carry the little one with you. The handle would have to be on the open side or you would have an escapee. I'm so glad the Craft Angel visits.
