Carolyn, I make some wonky quilts (similar to this) by simply cutting 17x17 inch squares, stacking up 8-12 of them, randomly cutting across them, then swap one of the cut pieces to the bottom and sewing them back together. You don't have to match any seams, and you can make as many cuts as you want. I usually make 4-5 different cuts across the squares. Once I finish doing this, I square them up to a standard size (usually 15x15), sew the blocks together, add a border or two, and all done. I have gone back and done some embroidery on the seams while quilting, but not always.
It's pretty fast to do, not near as pretty as one done the normal way.. but pretty in a different way.
It's a beginner way to do this sort of thing. I taught one of my friends to quilt, and this was her first one (and still her most favorite pattern).
I'm going to look later to see if I have any pictures to show you how it comes out. This is a similar thing, but I don't do quite as orderly. I also typically put a piano key border on them using strip techniques, to add to the patchiness of the quilt.

O'and I did find this on the quilter cache site .. Crazy patchwork on dryer sheets for the base and they do not have to be removed.

Take a look at Molly Mine she has a lovely lot in many sizes as well. I have recently purchased some to try, this will be after Christmas (hopefully)
They are done in the hoop and also have the fancy stitches on them as well
Molly Mine has some lovely crazy pieced quilt blocks. Lots of sizes and designs with the fancy stitches stitches already on the designs that is dine in the hoop. I have recently purchased some but have not got to stitching out yet, (after Christmas hopefully) Take a look it may be helpful Good Luck
I have seen some don't know where but, they have fancy stithing along the joins so you don't seam and turn done more like an applique....wendy
You are great quilter so she will have excellent teacher. The stitches is by choice and I think beginner easy pattern so she will enjoy and love her work when finished.
