If you have a Viking emb machine, try turning off the auto cut for jump stitches. If you have a lot of thread changes those cut threads on the back can cause a mess.
If the problem is on the back, it usually means that it's a bobbin problem. Make sure that the bobbin area is free of lint/threads. I recently did not put my bobbin in properly and had the same problem too. However, my upper tension is causing problems on the backside of my embroidery. So it's best to check that too. If my upper tension is too loose, I get thread nests on the back.
