I signed up for a free online BOM class with quilter Jinny Beyer. She has some really beautiful quilts & although most of them I wouldn't even dream of trying this class looked relatively easy. BOY was I wrong. Her 1/4" seam allowance is a scant 1/4"seam allowance? If you do an exact scant three threads away from the 1/4" seam allowance then it works out but if you do a proper 1/4"seam allowance it will not & if you do one thread past the 1/4" line or even two you will have to rip out the seams & start again................ask me how I know. Anyway I didn't sign up to get stressed out so I am making mine with a proper 1/4" seam allowance from now on. It took way to long to make one simple block. The only difference is my quilt will end up being a SCANT smaller. lol which I really won't mind as it is a large queen almost a king size. One block a month I can handle lol This will eventually have a handle on it but that will be another class I guess because it wasn't in this one?

Wow, my seam allowance would be way off too.
I'm working on a crazy quilt, no way to mess up and all loosiegoosie blocks. Some day I'll make a real quilt with real blocks :)
Love the first block, can't wait to see end results :)

Now Loosie crazy quilts are very real quilts & can often take much longer to create then regular pieced blocks. All those seams have to be covered by fancy stitches & that can be very time consuming. I'm sure your quilt will be wonderful. Thank you ~hugs

Thanks, doing all the top stitching with the machine, hope to have it done by Valentines day :)

Beautiful job Loralye...I signed up for the classes too..Block of the Month...I love the Jinny Beyer fabrics...she always coordinates the colors so well...she does hand piecing and quilting...no machine...but the class is showing both ways...there is really no trick to the scant quarter inch seam...you just need to move your needle position slightly...once you get the setting...write it down and you will always have it when you need it...or set a special stitch setting in your machine for it...stitch a test strip and measure it to test your seam allowance to insure is is indeed "her" scant quarter inch seam allowance...Your quilt should be stunning when it is finished...can't wait to see what's next!

It is lovely Loralye, it's a quilter's nightmare when the seams don't join. Thank God for our 1/4" marks on the sewing plate!!!!! I can always do exact 1/4" seams - works everytime for me! By the way I love your colourway, love Chris

Beautiful block. I would be pulling my hair out to have to keep picking out and resewing due to the patterns scant 1/4 inch seam allowance. Sounds like they are loosing customers instead of just planning designs out with a full 1/4 inch allowance. Most sewers who are accustomed to sewing a 5/8 inch sew allowance for clothing and home decorating patterns are going to find it very hard to go even smaller than 1/4 inch, or I least I would think so anyway. Glad that just making the blocks a scant smaller is not going to effect the quilt pattern other than the quilt just being a tad smaller and with a king to queen size quilt it really should not make much difference. Your mood while sewing the blocks is of much higher importance as you are right you did not pay good money to get stressed out. I do love the block you have finished and I even have a few of those batiks in my own stash. Hope that the rest of the quilt blocks will be stress free having made the decision to just stitch the seams with a full 1/4 inch. Hugs for the stress you have had to contend with!

thanks & I will do it with the proper 1/4" as that is what I have been taught all along. I realize precision is quilting is pretty much paramount but I know enough to make it work like this & this way the fabric Kit that I purchased will be sure to fit. In case it doesn't I just might have some in my stash as some of the dates on the fabrics in the kit say 2008 & so on. Now that I have made the decision to go ahead this way I feel quite relieved. ~hugs~

This kind of thing is why I've been afraid of quilting. I will never be as exact as I need to be. My eyesight just isn't good enough any longer!
But this looks great.

you can always try it with a simpler pattern & many love applique designs too more forgiving. There is always crazy quilting where the seams go every which way & are very forgiving & quite lovely too. ~hugs~
