Try when you click on the program and get the drop down list instead of clicking open go down to run as administrator. I had to do this with an old version of a lettering program I have. Worked fine in XP but couldn't get it to work in windows 7 now I can still use it.
Check the "compatibility mode" in windows 8.1. Have a computer person help you.
Windows 8.1 has both 64 bit and 32 bit in it.

I'm holding my breath on this one. Can't do a repair or recovery cause it's XP. I guess I have to come up with some more money and go to 8. I don't like anything above XP. Now which is more important? Computer, battery or embroidery machine. To me all of the above.
my machines were not compatable either, if all this does not work I will try a used comp. just for digitising...wendy
Hi Wendy...here is a link to the Brother site and it does show that there is some compatibility for PE-6 and Windows 8.1...perhaps it might help you to get your program working...I would also call Brother Customer Service...they may be able to help you...sometimes they don't say that the program is supported, but I had a similar issue with my Janome MBX software and XP...it said it wasn't supported...but I talked to the Software Tech at Janome...she told me that it would "probably" work but Janome couldn't say it would work..she helped me load the program on my Win 8.1 and it worked like a champ..worth a try...
I have been there but its the 64 bit that not compatable, I have installed it, when I open it just flashes on & off again, computer repairer has sais I cant do it, it was acer who told me to try a vm program....wendy
I do hope you get the new computer up and running with your software.
Making it work will depend on the virtual program you have AND if it is installed in a way that will allow you to use your program. I suggest you keep your old computer in case you need to send it to be repaired.
I highly recommend to all Cuties that they IF they need a new computer -- order (online or in a major office/computer store) a Windows 7 Professional (or Ultimate) computer. It comes with the ability to have a virtual machine on it. It is also licensed to have XP, Windows 2000, or any other earlier version of Windows on it. Windows 8 does not have this ability. With a virtual environment -- you have to make sure the USB drives are installed properly (and in the right order) to make the software work.
I have a 64 bit Windows 7 computer with a virtual XP machine. I can switch to it just like opening a new window or program.
Good luck!
Good luck!! COnputer are great when they work... Not so great when they don't!
not computer savvy but sounds like a nuisance good luck with it. Marian
