Seeing the confusion and the remark that jumps are taken out in the digitising process I like to add that jumps can't always be eliminated. Same colour, different places, there will be unavoidable jumps now and again.
My machine always cuts when doing thread changes and it also has the option to auto-cut jumps, IF the digitiser added stops. I have seen tutorials that state "always remove stops as household machines can't cut them". Well, now some (top)models can.
But when you get one of those designs with lots of jumps and you think the auto-cutter is a blessing and will solve the problem of a badly digitised design, forget it, the back will look like a piece of fur.
I only turn mine cutter off when I use the embroidery to quilt. It doesn't look very nice on the back of a quilt and if you trim off the short tails you can all be cutting the knots. I leave long tails and then hand tie them and bury the tail between the layers and then cut the rest of the tail. It takes a little time, but make the quilt look so much nicer.
I don't even know if I have it. I guess I am behind. Kay
Well mine is still off and looks way better not thick ,so it will most likely stay off forever lol hugs Noah ***Carolyn
I like the back of my work to look as well as the front unless it is enclosed. Those long tails the cutter leaves behind will make it a chore to have to pick out. Better not to have them/Lillian
I have the Viking Diamond and I thought I'd love the thread cutter....but I turn mine off most of the time. Just too many long snarly threads on the bottom...so I trim the jumps on the top and then tidy up the bottom as well. I used to do hand embroidery years ago and I still like the bottom side to look neat.
I have Innovis 4000D. I turn the cutter off when I do FSL. it makes a mess of the back side if I leave it on.
Are we talking about jump stitches or just the cutter when a color change is needed. I certainly would not switch off my cutter for color change. Sorry Marg, a bit lost here. LOLA. Sarah
I was talking about jump stitches but I think some Cuties thought I was talking about colour changes. Like you I would not turn off the colour change cutter either. Hugs Marg
Marg I never turn mine off either! Sometimes it doesn't always cut the bottom thread at the end of a colour but it does that and usually when it needs a service. I wasn't happy with the last service as it still does it and even though the guy who services my machine gives three months service guarantee I nevcer got to use it much so it's now been seven months since. I'll mention it to him if I take it back to him. Hang on you have the same machine as me! So are you sure yours doesn't have thread cutter ?
Yes mine has an auto thread cutter to cut after each colour but I thought that the bigger machines cut the thread instead of doing long jump stitches. Am I wrong.
I couldn't say for sure but I can't imagine that they would. I always believed that the jump stitches are eliminated during the digitizing process. I could be wrong.
It's good how we all learn new things. Makes it all worth while ! :D
My first machine had one and so does the new one and I leave it on - I think it is neater and then sometimes I trim the threads a little more.
I LOVE the thread cutter! The only time i turn it off is for tiny lettering or for FSL with a bunch of dots (there is a giraffe that I have made several times and it is better).
never knew that you could turn in on/off. My back does not look messy ..I will give it a try; maybe I notice a difference.
....I leave mine on most of the time...easy to trim the little threads...I will usually turn it off when using metallic threads...or sometimes when using a very small font...but other than that...I love it!
I would like to read Noah's comments, was this on cuties? I had not thought or heard about this thanks for the heads up on this, always something to keep our minds busy. Toni lee
I leave mine on also... it is not hard to trim the backside at the end. I find it neater than having all those loose threads getting stuck in other colors. Suzanne
Mine stays on. It is so quick and easy to cut the threads after if it is something that is going to show.
I only turn it off for metallic thread and if I am doing small lettering. Hugs. Nan W
on reading noahs post I was going to try turning it off, now I see yours and dont now, my backs do look like the black design, finished for today but I think I will try tomorrow....wendy
I don't turn mine off either. Unless I'm doing lettering. It's easier to cut them by hand after the job is finished. Love Chris
You do learn something new everyday!
I didn't even realise I could turn off the cutter until you mentioned it. I went to check out my machine and what do you know I can turn it off if I want to! LOL I just left the settings untouched and didn't even know that was an option!
Thanks for the post ;)
Marg, I have an automatic cutter and turn it off if I am doing something that has different colours but I was to do it all the same colour then cut the jumps if need be. What type of machine do you have?
Lyn I have a Brother 1500D. I love it but just thought one with auto thread cutter would cut all the jump threads. Hugs Marg
I also leave my on unless I am doing small alphabets or designs with short jump stitches.
