Hello Cuties,

Further question with regard to digitiser identity in free downloads.

I have started making a folder of copyright details of each digitiser which I can refer and use design accordingly
But some websites give free downloads of set. There is no mention of digitiser or copyright. What to do in such case.

Secondly, digitisers offer designs free for few days and they are sold later or say free hourly or daily designs we download. Can they lead us to trouble?
How do we avoid that?

This freebies and copyright etc are so confusing..

It does not make any difference whether a design is free or not when you download it. There are two things you need to know:
1. Do they have a license to digitise the artwork to an embroidery design.
2. What license do they give you: personal use only or can you sell items that have the embroidery on it. Do they allow you to alter the design in anyway - e.g. sew only parts of it. Read the terms of use of the sites you download from.

When I bought my first embroidery machine in '92 I bought a few embroidery cards as well and was not told by the dealer that one of them was for personal use only. When I opened the package and read the small lettering I decided to be aware in future.
I only came to download from the internet in 2007 and filed the designs per site, later i decided to add a name for the design and I added codes for the different sites. I made a separate folder for all "personal use only" designs. And that contains the expensive "Hummels" by Pfaff, the Disney designs I bought from Brother and quite a few more.

I do not trust sites that don't give information about the origin of their artwork. I don't care if they use free or bought clipart, but I do want to know if they have a license to use it.

ALL designs are automatically copyrighted as soon as they have been created regardless of copyright regulations being included in the files or not.
And it makes no difference if they are free. The copyright still applies.
What sort of trouble do you think you can get into by downloading designs that are offered by a designer free, then put up for sale later?
There are some sites that give away other people's designs. Beware of those. They are illegal.
Licensed designs such as Disney, super heroes, sporting logos, cartoons, comics etc are also illegal. Brother is the only site licensed to sell Disney designs .

This is a good idea. I would like to know what others think.

i have lots of designs but probably not as many as some that have been embroidering for a while.
When I first started downloading I wasn't even aware of copyright on designs or that some offered for download may be considered illegal. Fortunately I am not a fan of those style of designs so never downloaded any.
