What on earth happened........

Looks very 21st Century. (aka looks good)
I would use the sewing machine to do some extra stitching on the bits of the fabric that might come loose in the wash.
You may have done what I did once.
I had the machine too close to a wall and that stopped the free movement of the hoop. Made for an interesting design, just not what I was trying to stitch out.

I agree with the comments about the hoop getting bumped. I've had that happen, but my results were not as pretty as yours. Looks like a modern design.

All I could think of was Carole King's song "I Feel the Earth Move"
I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down, tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you're around

It really does not look that bad, you know...

I couldn't figure out what was wrong! After I read the comments people made, I finally saw what was "wrong." Call me nuts, but I really like how it turned out! Granted, normally when something shifts like this, I would start over. But, I love it!

After you trimmed the appliqued fabric and put the hoop back to machine you probably did not push the hoop till the end (until it clicked). That has happened to me also. Another possible answer is that the hoop could be accidently bumped and get misaligned.
You may try to save the towel if you have a patience. The satin stitches could be removed by clipping with small scissors on the back (on stabilizer). Then you can remove most of red and orange thread from front. Running stitches would be difficult to remove from nap, but is still possible. The next precise task would be to hoop towel at exact the same place - look for hoop marks on stabilizer for that. Next, try to trace the applique outline with the needle without thread first to see if it will match the outline. When you get the exact position you need to repeat satin stitches. Another possible solution is to use sewing machine's satin stitch. Adjust the width a little bigger than you have now and using a foot control go slowly over outlines of both hearts.

You just never know sometimes, what happens. Maybe John design was created for a thin fabric and just the thickness of the town caused the problem. Try Carolyn's (noah') suggestion and just cover it over.
Or who knows, maybe you intended it to look like that - a new modern version!

You've created a new design called Vertigo Heart. I think your hoop got bumped. Happens to me all the time, my machine is too near the wall, lol.

Awww...not too bad...looks to me like the towel shifted...even with adhesive backed stabilizer this can happen...the only other time I have had a design out of register like this was when something hit the hoop during a part of the embroidery and the hoop misaligned...whenever I suspect that something has hit the hoop, I turn off the machine and turn it back on...the hoop will recalibrate to the proper position and I can resume the design...

I just don't understand it, The towel was used with adhesive backing, I can't see how it would shift....... 😢

I would say, as another Cutie said that after you had trimmed the material, either the towel shifted or the hoop was not put back correctly. I really do not think that it was the latter as a hoop not put back properly would have given more problems - ask me, I know. Thank you for showing us what can happen.

Isn't it heartbreaking to see this happen. The hoop got bumped somehow or the towel shifted during the embroidery.

Not bad. But think. You didn´t put the hoop back correctly after cut around the applique. Happened to me. Now always doublecheck

Looks like the new modern designs I have been seeing. My guess would be something shifted while stitching. But this has its own flair.
