Onesies - I was told in a recent class that this is a trademarked term (Gerber?) and that we must be careful not to call them that unless it is that brand. Otherwise, it is a "baby bodysuit!" Let's be careful out there in our booths!

Kohl's sells Carter and Jumping Bean brands and both call their garments bodysuits.

I think bodysuit is a global word and can not be trademarked.

Some things copied from a quick search:

"ebaysellingcoach.blogspot.com/.../dont-call-that-baby-bodysuit-onesie.ht...
Aug 5, 2013 - Gerber has trademarked the word "onesie" and eBay is removing listings containing the word "onesie" that are not Gerber products."

"Gerber Onesies a trademarked word - be careful selling on ...
www.examiner.com/.../gerber-onesies-a-trademarked-word-be-careful-se...
Jan 15, 2014 - Gerber has decided that the word "onesie" is a trademarked term and is not allowed on eBay listings as a keyword."

"An infant bodysuit is a garment designed to be worn by infants much like a T-shirt; they are distinguished from T-shirts by an extension below the waist, with snaps or Velcro that allow it to be closed over the crotch. The purpose of the opening at the crotch is to facilitate access to the infant's diaper. Like T-shirts, infant bodysuits come in a wide variety of designs and may be worn as undergarments or as outer shirts. Other names include Onesies (a registered trademark often used in the United States as if it were generic; see below), creepers, diaper shirts, babygro, babygrow, mameluco or snapsuits.
Babygro is also a trademark brand, invented in the U.S"

Where will it all end.. I thought Gerber only made baby foods. Soon we will only be able to use numbers instead of words to describe our wares or will someone trademark that too..

Oh - life is getting complicated. First I wondered about what an onesie is at all; then I was reading often about "Gerber" and did not know what it means. However, I am from Germany and always happy to learn more
about UK or US specialities, differences and idioms. Seems one has to be very careful to say or write about "things" nowadays..
Thank you for these detailed explanations :-) Maria

Gerber makes all kind of baby products, not just clothing. Including jarred baby food.

The fashion world is even calling jumpsuits for aduts "onsies", so I wouldn't be worried using the term.

I googled onesies and got the following on Wikipedia:
quote
Onesie (jumpsuit)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A modern adult size onesie.
Onesie /ˈwʌnzi/ is a commonly used word for loose-fitting casual jumpsuits for adults,[1] made of knit cotton (as used in sweatshirts), fleece, or chenille. They are mostly intended as loungewear or sleepwear, but have gained significant popularity as stylish street fashion. In the UK, the onesie became very popular during the late 2000s and early 2010s.[2]

The Norwegian company OnePiece is often credited with creating the modern onesie and starting the onesie fashion craze, beginning in Scandinavia and rolling on to mainland Europe and the UK.[3][4] OnePiece have the industrial design right on their onesie design.[5] Another early manufacturer is the All-in-One Company in the UK.[6][7]

The word "onesie" is likely derived from Onesies, a brand name for infant bodysuits that is owned by the Gerber corporation and used for infant clothing. In 2008, when casual jumpsuits became increasingly popular, the press started discrediting them as "adult onesies"[8] and the name seems to have eroded to a generic word.

Adult onesies have appeared on U.S. TV shows such as Scrubs and Friends.[9]

Several online businesses and department store chains sell adult onesies from a wide range of makes.

I wonder if you really have to be careful given the use of the word for so many one-piece products.

That's interesting! I don't do shows so don't have to worry about it. But I do see them advertised all the time as such. Tks for the info.
