I saw an idea similar to this on Pintrist . Instead of cutting out felt letters and numbers - I just embroidered them! As we never put numbers on our house (the post office has changed our address 4 times!) - people will now know they found us.

This is from advanced-embroidery-designs.com. It is a free design in their tutorial section on how to machine embroider photo stitch designs. It stitched out so nicely. It was just a test stitch for me to see how hard it was to do photo stitch designs.
