Good morning Cuties! I took a week off (almost) from Cute, just checking in a few minutes a day. I threw myself into deep house cleaning, to help settle my nerves, about Avery. I cleaned all my house inside except the ceilings-lol- in each room, walls, furniture, wall hangings, washing beddings & curtains,EVERYTHING! I was pooped each day, to say the least., but now I can get back into sewing. I have a list, but did get one thing crossed off yesterday, its in Projects. I wanted to say I hoped everyone had a nice Mothers Day. My kids and hubby treated me. I came home from church and in my backyard was a fish fry. Some of the kids and grands were already here and some came behind me. My husband had cooked the fish stew and made sweet tea. Our son fried the catfish he caught the day before. He also did hushpuppies and we had a cole slaw. Nice to come home and have lunch cooked for you. They also cleaned up afterwards (Yeah!). I received this gift from all of them. I did a craft fair last week-end, and although it was mostly shady at the park, I did have to move my chair around several times and eventually my table was in the sun. They got me this canopy tent for that. I told them I haven't done this but about 4 times, but they encouraged me to do more. I had seen one next to me that day and it was a taupe color. I walked under it and it was so cool, it surprised me. I would have preferred taupe,but Grayson picked it up and said they were out of that color so he got purple, not blue....Do you think I could monogram 'TOOGIE' on it? If those 3 initials of Masons were almost 53,000 stitches, I don't know if I can work my little machine that hard for Toogie-lol-If I do what color on purple? He told me they may get the taupe in and just exchange it. I thought the reason it was so cool under the lady's, was because of the lighter color. Does anyone have a dark one? Is it hotter under it, since black (dark) usually draws heat? Well, thanks for listing to me and I want to get to work on that list now. I will have Nora today, but 'we' can work on the church quilts, if SHE is in a sewing mood-lol- Have a great day Cuties-Toogie

Wonderful Mother's Day Surprise! Also think you were wise to keep yourself busy getting your cleaning done as you now know it is complete so you are not procrastinating or thinking you should be doing the cleaning instead of your embroidery or sewing. If you really would like the taupe color awning then I also would say to wait and exchange it. Dark lettering of just about any color would show up very well on taupe and be easy to read. A dark awning will show if you were trying to spot it from across a field but the lettering will not be as easy to read in my opinion as the dark lettering on the taupe would be. If you do decide to keep the maroon purple, then a gold or even a light matching shade of the purple maroon that would match the awning color would be nice. You always seem to match colors well, so I am sure you will know just what would look best with the colors you love, the booth set up you have. I look forward to see what you decide . Pam

About your canopy: Using appliques would save you lots of stitches. If you use a fusible underneath the fabric to bond the applique to the canopy first, then satin stitch around the edges, it should be quite permanent, especially if you use an outdoor fabric. I'm thinking rip-stop nylon or Sunbrella or such - not likely to fade or rot.
Another advantage of applique is that you could make the letters bigger than your embroidery hoop allows and just outline them with machine satin stitch, like we did in the old days before hoops and computers. If the satin stitches are the same color as the applq fabric, they won't show even if they are not perfect. Good luck; it is a great idea to identify yourself at a fair!

Applique might be a good idea but I wonder about ironing it onto the nylon topper? The iron must be a certain temperature (following manufacturers settings) in order to properly fuse with that in mind would that be too hot for the nylon?
I just got back and am reading all the suggestions. I thank you all for taking such an interest. I really am leaning toward Caroline's idea of the bunting.

Wow, such a treat to have a fish fry at home and not have to do the work. You must have felt like the queen of the day! Good on you for getting your home spruced up, even if it was to keep your mind off other things. You'll now have more time to devote to your desired activities (sewing/embroidery/etc.). Enjoy yourself, now that all that hard work is done.

I do plan on sewing, but I know I will be helping even if it is still keeping the kids, while my daughter and SIL move. So I wanted to get my cleaning out of the way, over with....The fish was great and they really treated me like the queen, even if it was for only one day.Our son and one of our SIL fish pretty often when they have days off. They enjoy fishing, I enjoy eating-lol

Well, I don't know..the fish was pretty good!-lol- Yes, no joking it was good of them to clean up, after the meal I just felt like a good nap...had coffee instead, and they made that too!

You Go Girl! Ha! Cleaning house is one of the most therapeutic things I know of, especially the deep-cleaning. I am so happy that you had such a wonderful Mother's Day. You deserved it. I really like your canopy & those are some good catches on the catfish.
Saturday was Delson's (my husband) 67th birthday & my youngest son & daughter & their families all went fishing at my daughter's pond & had a cook-out. I was too sick to go. I was still not feeling well on Sunday, but my oldest son cooked out for us. Delson made me risers for my embroidery & sewing machines and a thread rack that holds 10 spools for my embroidery machine. Now I've just got to get feeling better so I can use them!

Cymblene, I was wondering where you had gone! I thought you must have left Cute as I haven't seen or heard from you. I hope you feel better and can get some use of your wonderful gifts you received. I think the biggest catfish here was about 20 lbs. He got one the other day almost 50 lbs but they don't taste as well as smaller ones. I'm happy for you.It is nice to be appreciated and remembered. I am happy I have the cleaning done before school is out for the summer. The kids will stay here off and on and its hard to start with them here.

I agree with Pam in that if you prefer the taupe to the purple then try to exchange when they get more in stock... I think the darker one (my daughter has a navy one but her business is Sapphire Imagery so she needs the blue) will be hotter too. ~hugs~

That was why I wanted the taupe, because hers was cool. The purple wouldn't show soil as easy though......just don't want to be hot under it.

What a lucky gal to have such a supportive family. One couldn't have asked for a better day. I love that they bought you the canopy too.
My choice of colour for your name would be a rich yellow!!! Yellow on purple is so eye-catching. Also I would hold out a bit and wait to see if your preferred taupe colour can be found for you. That's the idea...to not have to worry about cleaning for a while and just sew...or at least try to. Nora has the fever today, diarrhea, but she sleeps off and on and I have got the church quilts embroidered. The last one is stitching now. ..I think the yellow would look nice but I may do like asterixsew/Caroline suggested and do a bunting. That way maybe while I am making the bunting Academy will get some taupe in, if I still want that color.
Bunting is the PERFECT solution, well done Caroline!!!

Wonderful gift - perhaps you could applique "Toogie" on it - that wouldn't be near the number of stitches!!! I got a fifty dollar gift certificate to "Michaels", and some fat quarters (my DH knows what I like) and a old DVD which I have always liked (Hope Floats). Hugs to your family! Laura*

I like that movie too and most other older movies. You were treated nicely too. A few years ago,my husband went to the nurseries and got my Knock Out Roses that I have planted, along my front porch. They are so pretty and always a reminder. I think the bunting idea that Caroline had may be what I do.

Hi Toogie, you have just done what we call a Spring Clean in the UK. Sounds like you had a great Sunday. Please what is hushpuppies as its a brand of shoes in the UK. Right your embellishing the great gift. I would make bunting to hang up and I would then hang it up. You would not have the problem of attempting to get the huge amount of fabric through your machine. You could produce your name 4 times -one for each side. Your name could either be appliqued or embroidered. Have fun and let us see the end result

Bunting is a great idea! and you are right, I wouldn't have to worry with all that weight. Then if we used it for other outings, I wouldn't have my name on the canopy. Thank you for this idea,as lately, I have been slow thinking. (slower than usual-lol) We call it Spring cleaning here too and hush puppies are deep fried. They are made of corn meal and seasoning, like green onions. These had jalapenos, corn, etc kinda like what we call mexican cornbread. It is also a brand of shoes here, but we didn't have those with our meal-lol- Isn't it interesting to learn what other people do and how they live, but in the end we are so similar.

Pheeew, I am exhausted just thinking about your deep spring cleaning...I would love to have you come over and tackle mine...not my favorite thing to do!!! So nice you had a wonderful Mother's Day...and your fish fry sounds yummy, too! For asterixsew, it is said that Hush Puppies got their name in the South...little bits of corn dough would be thrown to the dog when they started barking...and they would say when they threw them...Hush Puppies...

I never knew that!.. Would take more than a few of these hush puppies,to hush my husbands dogs. He use to buy dog food,two 50 lbs sacks, at a time. He shocked a woman at Walmart one time. We were in line to check out and she turned around to him and said he must have a lot of dogs. He told her, "No mamn, since I retired this is cheaper than groceries for us to eat!" -lol-See I 'm not the only 'nut' in this family!

When I have attended craft shows on a hot, sunny day, I have found myself edging underneath a vendor's canopy to get a moments relief from the heat! It helps one have a cool breeze, at least every once in a while. Direct sun will do me in quickly!!

Thank you and you did realize how I knew about the lady's canopy across from me...I was trying to get relief-lol- I never cared a lot about fishing, but I always enjoyed going out in the boat. It was so relaxing to me. I would take a good book or just sit and enjoy being on the water. Stayed out of my hubby way too,so he could cast his line. Of course, I did enjoy the meal afterwards. ...Wish you were here to enjoy it with us. I tried to bring a couple home from church. They have 2 children, both living in other states, so I knew they were alone. They were thankful, but said kids would be phoning. I also asked a lady whose kids weren't coming. Someone else had beat me to the punch, so she had already accepted their invitation...as far as the cleaning, I don't have energy, I had push. Seems like I have to push myself. I did at least one room a day and it usually took all day, with having to leave twice a day for work, going to the dentist and such. I used to get so much done in a day, now it takes a week.
I understand about the "push"!! It is so true that as I get older, it takes so much longer to accomplish even small tasks. But, I just feel blessed to be able to keep pushing, take it in stride, and thank the Lord for each day to continue "pushing"!! LOL

We had a Dark Green one and is was cool to be under. My Husband also made a curtain of Shade cloth that we could attach to one side to stop the sun coming in. When you think about it you are only really covered if the sun is directly above you. The panel was just a square with large tent eyelets in it that could be tied to the frame on whatever side we needed it. Not fixed permanent.

Smart Hubby!-I wish I had some of that screening fabric. My B-I-L once found a whole HUGE roll of it, on the side of the highway. Must have fallen off a truck. Anyway, I used it to completely change the screening on both sides of a pop up camper! Talk about a job!

I have been making pendant banners and used a couple of different large applique fonts,( One from Five Star Fonts & one from Julia's needle) they didnT take hardly any time compared to fill stitch, maybe you could try this.

Did you do your pennants different colors or all same color? I will have to see what applique fonts I have. I know I have a bubble or wubble one,from somewhere,but it looks too kiddish. Are your pennant edges satin stitched or cut with pinking shears? Did you make them with felt or fabric? A lot of questions-lol......The fried catfish was good and the fish in the stew was too. I ate it the next day too.

Avery has some days that are better than others, then a few school days, where the nurse can only feed her once. Her appointment is a week from this Thursday, with the surgeon, on the 20th. Thank you for asking and praying for her...The bunting idea was brilliant of Caroline and if one of the kids 'borrow' MY canopy (lol) it won't have my name on it. We did enjoy the day, even if all I did was sit and relax..I kept Nora today and she was sick. A high temp,almost 102. She is trying to cut a back tooth. She puts her finger in her mouth and says hurts. She also had diarrhea so I will keep her again tomorrow, since she can't mix with the other kids at the sitters, in case its a virus. Ashley didn't work today, she is moving some things, but she has to work tomorrow.
Toogie the plus point of having your name on it would be that anyone who borrowed it would be reminded every time they used it that it was borrowed and needed to be returned to you.
lol-so true asterixsew...bet my husband wish he could do that with his tools and such.........they just tend to keep them until he needs them, then he has to borrow (go get )

There is nothing like throwing ones self into a bit of cleaning. I bet you felt good when it was all finished. A month or so ago I took everything out of my kitchen cupboards and had a good clean. It was amazing what I found in my store cupboard.

Sounds like a great day. I'd go with the bunting, but do each letter in a different font/design. This can be a great way to show what you can do. Also, Bright yellow ribbon would be very eye catching to tie it up & bow in the breeze. Much more visible to shoppers than the taupe one!

you are really so lucky to have such a nice family. After almost 30 years of marriage, I envy you girls who have such a loving family. My faith keeps me going and discovering you cuties gives me joy. of course my sewing and now embroidering. wish I could do as well as you can. God bless you and your family.
