is there anyone who can explain why there is so much difference in kb between the kind of files, see picture , this is of one of the designs I did DL.

It is my understanding that the largest files are the original file formats. It looks as though it was created using Wilcom. The rest of the files types have been "translated" and they lost some information in the transfer. The amount lost is small, but it may have missing colors, stitches, or other information. I would look for the difference in the stitch count -- if you have software that will do that.

I always convert every format from the design file and not from one embroidery format to the next. The stitch number may vary with a few stitches, usually 1 or 2 as some start in the centre and others don't, but the size of the files is very different. It happens in 6D just as in Embird.

I have often wondered the same thing, especially the huge difference between Jef and Pes mostly. Thanks for bringing the subject up!!

Yes, it is also my understanding that not all file formats carry the same information. Since I have a Viking machine, we were always told to download the .vp3 format, because (they say) it has a larger color pallet than other formats, such as the .hus, for example. In the example presented here, I wonder how the size of the .vp3 file compares to the others. A frustrating thing that I have noticed, however, is that some digitizing software does not keep any of the ties when converting from their original format to the .vp3 format. For that reason, recently I have been downloading the pes formats, especially for redwork designs.

Formats do not all contain the same information. vp3 is much larger than vip because the first contains colour information, notes the digitiser might make and stops, vip does not.
Between brands the software of the machine may differ enough to need more information - the code for the movement of the pantograph might by different and that would influence the file size required.
When you convert pes to vp3 the file size increases a lot and as you can see in my post it did not make any difference whether I converted from the design file to the vp3 format or changed pes to vp3 using 6D or Embird, in both cases they were exactly the same size.

With the size of the hard drives that are on the computers nowadays, the size of the file does not seem to be as important to me as perhaps it once was. As Viking has recommended downloading the vp3 format, saying that it contains the most information, I was very surprised to find that many of the vp3 files that I have purchased do not have ties. If a color chart is included with the design, it is a relatively easy task to make the necessary changes, adding ties is a more difficult proposition, at least for me. I have yet to determine which software(s) produce the vp3 files with no ties when converted from their original format. Recently I had a problem with a redwork design unraveling, and found that pes is the only format from this particular digitizer which has ties that I can see in my software. Prior to this, it had never occurred to me to check if a design had ties - I just assumed that they all did, and that the color information was the only criteria that made the vp3 the best choice. Of course, with a design that I create myself, vp3 is the best format, as it will indeed have all the information - color and ties. The issue comes in with purchased designs, especially if multiple formats are not included in a zip file. It would be nice to know which software other than Vikings' retains the ties when converted/saved as a vp3.
Vikings 5D needed ties to be added by hand and you could choose which ties (out of 5) to use; 6D no longer offers a choice, has only one, but it does add that automatically unless you set the software to not add them.
Embird does keep ties and let you add tie ons and tie offs if they are not there to start with..

How do you check to see if the design has ties?
pennyhal2 - You can see the ties when you bring the design into the embroidery software.
mops- Thank you so much for your comments. I have the Viking software (from 3DPro - to 6D Premier), so am familiar with what you are saying, and agree completely. The issue I have is with the purchased vp3 designs. Many do not have ties, and adding them after the fact is not such an easy thing. I have tried converting the file using 6D, but it does not add all the ties that are needed. For that reason, even though I would prefer the vp3 format, I have been downloading pes, just to make sure the ties are included.

WOW this is good o know. I just bought 6D and haven't had time to really have a look at it. Been occupied with getting all my (too) many designs on my new laptop since the old one had the Vista operating system... hey, if it still worked...why change it... 8-)

When I convert the design format to the various embroidery formats (not from one format to another) I get the same sort of results. It has to do with the information the machine needs.
I digitised a design today and save it in a number of formats - see picture 1.
vip for instance does not save colour information, vp3 does and is considerably larger vip 4kB, vp3 34kB. Both can be used with the newest Viking and Pfaff machines.
Pes is always the largest, but when converting from pes to vip and vp3 in the 6D program I get exactly the same results 4kB and 34kB.
However, when I use Embird to convert from pes to vip and vp3 something remarkable happens: the vp3 file is as large as the one converted from the design file (34 kB), but the vip one is now larger (12 kB). see picture 2. No idea why and no idea if that would make any difference in the stitching - it might be just useless information, but I am off to bed and not going to test it now. Might give it a try tomorrow, although I'll have a busy day as it is. But I am very curious!

From what I know. Exp and dst do not carry color information and therefore are smaller files. After that pes is usually larger then hus.
