GOOD MORNING CUTIES AND EVENING TOO!
There was an almighty ruckus this morning outside our gum tree. There were 8 minor birds (horrible things they are) attacking a family of Kookaburras. Mum was hanging onto the edge of the nest and one was in the tree higher up and one on our back railing.
The older ones flew off and this one was left. I don't know if he/she is ill or what - he/she never moved away from me as I neared him/her. I don't feed our Kookaburras as they prefer fresh meat, but I gave him/her a small piece of chicken and he/she took it right out of my hand. He/she has gone now, but what a beauty it was.
It is so cold here this morning, maybe even the birds are trying to find somewhere warm! Mum has just rung me to go and get her a newspaper as she doesn't want to go out in the wind!

Hi Leaha, that's what I was thinking. I couldn't get over the fact that he/she wasn't scared. I've had them coming here for years, maybe you are right - it's just so cold for us here at the moment 8C (46F) - a real snap freeze for us on the east coast of Australia. Love Chris
I'll take you 46F over our temps any day. It's been in the 95-100F everyday this week. Heat index has been over 132; feels like temps have been 123-128. I'm not a summer girl. Feels like walking into a wet wool blanket! hugs
I can't believe you are having such high temperatures - where do you live? I'm not a summer person either, I hate the heat. I'd rather have the cold at least you can put on another layer of clothes etc. Love Chris
I'm in Missouri and let me tell you summers here are a real misery! We get down to and below zero here also; not as cold as our Canadian Cuties...but just saying. It's easier to put more cloths on to be warmer, then it is to take enough off to be cooler. That's my story and I'm sticking to it !!!! LOL hugs
I agree with you Leaha, you can always get warmer, but it's so hard to get cool even if you go round naked. There is always the perspiration etc. Love Chris

Oh Chris, Thank you for sharing. I don't think I would have ever seen a Kookaburra If it wasn't for you. Amazing , and she took food right from your hand. They're a good size bird, Do they live in your yard all year or do they come at certain times of the year. We use to have 3 ducks that use to come to our yard every spring.

Hi Jen, firstly I was amazed that he/she took the food. Usually they have to be tamed - which some birds do become. 'Our' birds live out the back reserve but not all the time. There are a few reserves around this area where you often hear them. They begin nesting in the Spring which is usually around the 1st weekend in September. Love Chris

Fascinating. Just talking about animals I have never seen but in a zoo is amazing. I wonder if he/she will be back tomorrow expecting to be fed.

I was babysitting a friends myna bird once. It was quite a noisy animal and possessed a huge vocabulary. It was fun for a little while.

Hi Marian, I'm not sure if this is one of the baby birds or a parent. They are hard to distinguish from one another - they all look very similar. I agree with you about the Noisy Miner (not Asian Miner) birds, they are such a nuisance. Love Chris

Hi Chris, I also hope this little bird is not sick. The more I look at the picture I think it is a juvenile. The beak is not rock hard, but semi hard. I was quite surprised. Love Chris

I agree with Leaha, it's been really hot here also. It's going to be 98degrees or even in the 100's. Heat index has been really bad. Tue it was 126 with the heat index and then it stormed that evening. I'm in TN, right next to the MS line. I don't know were Leaha is from, but I'd say west somewhere...

Hi Mechille, yes these birds nest in that gumtree you can see behind the bird. The parent birds arrive in the Spring and have babies before Christmas. The past 2 Christmases we've actually had to sets of babies!

Love that you get to see these great creatures in their own environment.... Mother nature is sure awesome.....are they meat eaters by nature, or was this one just looking for a hand out?

Hi Vicki, yes Kookaburras are carnivores! Kookaburras eat the young of other birds, mice, snakes, insects, worms and other small reptiles. They love raw mince! There is a lady up the back on the other side of the reserve and she feeds them every afternoon. Love Chris
