I am a complete idiot when it comes to understanding computers and techy talk but I hope some of you more computer savvy cuties can help me in terms that I can understand. I recently downloaded Windows 10 on my desktop and I can't open the embroidery files that I download. I have PED basic, version 1.0 (which I probably upgraded at some point) on this laptop which has Windows 7. Is this what I need to put on my new desktop to be able to put PES files on there and be able to open them? Is there an upgrade available for Windows 10? Do I first need to put PED Basic on the desktop using the CD that came with it?

I just looked at my PED Basic on this computer and it is version 1.07, so I guess I did an upgrade at some point.

I know one thing that the PED Basic CD will not work. Apparently you have the latest version that I can see on the Brother website. That is all I can help you with so far. I have downloaded windows 10 and fortunately all my programs work so far. Does PED-Basic load when you click on it?

I have figured out that I can not use the CD but must go to Brothers website to download it but after I do that I don;t know what to do next. I never had the program on my desktop, only my laptop and someone else did that for me, but they are no longer around.

Ok, no one wants to take on the task of working with a dummy and I understand that. I have managed to put PED Basic on my computer and I know that it works because it can read what is currently on the reader card, but the part that I can't figure out is how to open the files so PED Basic can read the. If I go to downloads and click open there isn't anything that will open them. And I don't know how to find something that will.

Open the files in PED basic, just like you did when you read the card, but open the file(s) you store your designs in instead. In the left rectangle you may only see the card, but click on the open file icon and a list will appear. Remember to save the designs you want to keep on your card before loading new ones. Can't give you pictures as I am using my iPad, not my pc.
It's 5.30 am here, I'll try to get a bit more shut-eye and check in later.

Dear Queen of Hearts, I would write to Brother USA if you are from there and ask them to help you out and also to Windows and ask them for help too. I do hope you can receive some assistance. Love Chris

Thank you Chris. I don't think that Brother will be able to help because I have successfully put the program on my computer but I can't figure out how to open the files.

Have you gone into the downloaded file and opened it. Maybe you need to install it.

Just tried to open an embroidery file for the first time since DH put Windows 10 on the PC. It came up with this huge dialogue box. Now that was confusing. But my embroidery software was one of the things listed to try to open the file. It worked.
Hope you find what you need to do for you.
Had a thought: have you tried clicking on the Right Mouse button instead of the left one and opening the file with "OPEN WITH" and then choose what you wish to open the file with....

I've tried hat but there is nothing there that works. There isn't any embroidery software listed and I don't know where to find it.

have you checked compatabilty with brother and windows 10, I have pe des 6 it is not comp & you cannot up daste it either, with windows 8 , I had to have xp on my comp. as well to use the program...wendy

When I bought the desktop it had Windows 8 on it and I never figured out how to open PES files. I downloaded 10 hoping it would be easier to use than 8 and for the most part it is OK but I still can't open the PES files. Now I put PED on it and I'm sure that it is working because I can read what is currently on my card. But all the pes files are zipped and it can't read them.
When you instaalled the program it was most likely put in C:Program Files.
get a zip opener program , I have JZip its free and opens most

Thanks but I've been to both of them and no useful information there on how to open a file.

Does '10' have a search bar at the bottom of the ''start'' page" if so, type in 'file association'.....or do a Google search..maybe search first for explanation. RESCUER answered a similar question for me and said I needed to reset file association to access my pes files. But she said not to change too much or I could get into trouble. I think she is busy with her children this wk, but you could send her a PM--she is computer brilliant and maybe she can explain what you should do. Computers can be so frustrating when you have no one to help you understand them, and I tho't I was expert at XP...but WIN7 pro slapped me sideways!

If you right click on your mouse while over the zipped file, a new window should open, in the list, select (open with...) A new window should open asking (how do you want to open this file?) click on (File explorer), then Ok, the file will then open. Hope it helps.

And this my dear friends is why I have not DL Windows 10 and I am quite happy to stay with Windows 8.1. Too much confusion for me. Hugs Marg

Windows 10 is much better than 8. And everything works well. I can open my freebie software and print. Windows 8 was such a pain to use.

I keep getting messages on my Windows 7 asking me if I want to DL Windows 10. I am more than happy with Windows 7 and will wait before I even think about Windows 10. All my embroidery programs work perfectly and I am too worried about 'rocking the boat'
