Hello Cuties, today I went to the Cathedral for the Newcastle Floral festival. This year's theme was to honour our Anzac heroes from the First World War and on. It was truly beautiful. I took some pictures - but they don't do it justice.
My cat today is taking time to smell the roses.

2. Mum in front of the largest Gymea Lillies I've ever seen!
3. Mum in front of a large bouquet of Stocks and Roses. You can see the chart showing where the flowers are - the Cathedral is huge!
4. Peter Herd's display (one of Newcastle's top Florist) surrounding a rowboat with lots of our Native flowers.
5. Or famous Simpson with his Donkey also done by Peter Herd.

This is awesome. What are the huge red flowers? And are those live or fake cats smelling the roses? What a beautiful room.

If you are referring to the large Red flowers next to Mum in photo number 2 - they are Gymea lillies. The smaller fluffier ones are Banksias.

Most of the native flowers don't have a strong perfume. There were carnations and stocks and roses with fragrance though. Love Chris

Hi Chris the pics are great...I visited the Newcastle cathedral a few years ago just as the organ had been refurbished and was treated by the testing of it the sound was just "out of this world just my friend and myself with the 2 organ payers there it was truly magical...soozie

It is one of the best Cathedrals in Australia Soozie! When Mum and I arrived just after opening there was a young man playing the Piano near the Altar and it was sublime. Then the Orchestra played as we were leaving. We were very lucky to hear both. Love Chris

Those Gymea Lillies by your Mum are beyond HUGE!! Thank You for sharing this beautiful tribute to those who gave all in their service, it was a wonderful way for the flower festival to honor them. Love the kitties smelling the flowers too. Pam

Hi Pam, I've never seen Gymea lillies that large ever! They grow wild in the bush and have stalks metres high. The correct Botanical name is Doryanthes excelsa!

My husband and i with a few friends went yesterday, to Wodonga to see the ANZAC show on the road. Very interesting and moving and quite sad, to be reminded of what happened during those years. A wonderful display very well done, in a week they move on to Tasmania, and will visit many places. Loved your pictures Chris, thank you for sharing. Sandra.
