Hi, I have a big problem with my bernette chicago 7 and I'm kind of desperate. I cannot get it to load the designs from my usb. The only ones it will load are the ones from bernette customizer software after I've saved them as "BERNINA USB stick (*.EXP)". I have of course tried doing the exact same thing with the downloaded designs from both .art, .pes and others to no avail. The machine locates the files but I get the error on the first image when I try to load it. I also tried using bernina artlink to write to usb using both ".exp to usb" (upper left on second image) and "Deco" (lower left on second image). Nothing works, same problem. Please say someone has had the same problem with a fix :( bernina Norway doesn't answer me because they don't have a proper support page like bernina USA does, only "suggestions, questions, critique etc."-page. And of course, Bernina USA refuse to help me because I'm in Norway. The dealer I bought it from has no fix either.

I assume you have converted the pes, art and others to EXP through a conversion program. I do not own a Bernina so I am not much help other then what I have said.

I know this thread is a bit old, but I had the same problem and found a solution so thought I'd post for anyone else having the same issue.
The Bernette Chicago 7 has some weird requirements when trying to read a USB stick:
1. Make sure the USB stick is no larger than 2GB; and
2. File names cannot be longer than 17 characters.
Both these requirements solved my issue.

Hi Has anyone solved this mystery. I have had my Chicago 7 for three days and its driving me insaner. It will not read ANY usb sticks at all. I have done all that has been suggested and am now ready to give up. Pleeeaaase somebody help????/
I too have only had my Chicago 7 for a couple months, struggling too. I have given up on the 5 USB sticks I purchased and have just bought the Bernina USB. I've been trying to use the free embrilliance software but so far no luck getting anywhere. Will keep on trying I want to use bx fonts anyone had any success with the Chicago and embrilliance

I don't know about BERNINA machines, but many brands of machines only work with select sizes and brands of USB sticks. Also, with my Janome machine, if I place designs that are oversized for my machine, it won't read the others. Just three ideas to try out. Bernina USA or a Bernina customer might be able to help you find which brands and size USB's are best.
One more thought, most USB's being sold now are 2.0 and 3.0 is the new update. If your machine is older, it may have a USB version 1.0 port, like my 11 year old computer. If your port is 1.0 it can't read 2.0 or 3.0.

I don't know either. You might try to find a Yahoo Bernina group. Does your dealer have someone that repairs computers? The repain man might know.

The embF5 folder? The error I posted are print screens from that page. I tried creating the folder manually, and getting it created automatically by using "Deco" option when writing to usb in artlink. I think that page is a bit old or using an old artlink program because the screen above is what I get when I click "write to machine", not the one they get on 4th step, but it has the same options.
It is my understanding that your machine will not "look" for any designs or "recognize" them without the designs being located inside one of those folders.

That is the weird thing, it can find all the files but not load any of them, in a folder or not. I'm starting to think there is something wrong with the machine, it can't be this difficult =/

Stupid google chrome, now I can answer you. Thanks for all the suggestions, I forgot to mention I tried a new usb stick, an old usb stick and finally went and bought a 100$ bernina usb stick, no difference :(

The machine is just a few months old, bought new. The dealer has no idea about computers, she just deals in quilting equipment and sewing/embroidery machines.
The exact error is the picture on the right of the error image. The whole screen on the machine is covered with that.
Converting to exp is a bit tricky because it "splits" the other filetype into 3, an exp, a bmp and an info file so the machine can read it, but bernina help page suggests converting with artlink which is what I did, it converted correctly from what I see.

Just another thought. Some manufactures require the USB stick to be formatted. I think you did that already, but thought I mention it.

I'm a bit afraid of doing that with the bernina stick since it has some special drivers on it which makes it so expensive, would be a real shame if I managed to delete those =/ I tried formatting the other 2 but didn't work either.
You are right. Do not do It with the Bernina one. You paid a fortune for it. My dealer said a USB is a USB and I am grateful I can transfer my files with the cheapest one I can buy.

Hi and welcome. My suggestion is look on Youtube and see whats there. I would also get back to the dealer and say you have a problem and please can they find a source that can help you. Maybe she has little knowledge of the machine but if she has sold it to you and values her reputation she aught to try. I also had a look on the Bernina site and there is a bit there. I know from my Brother that if I have too many designs on a USB it causes overload and wont read and if the hoop sizes are too big they don't show up. From the pictures I have seen of your machine it looks great and hopefully the problems will be quickly sorted so you can sew away. After writing and posting I see you are in Norway. I am in the UK and have had for years a Bernina sewing machine. I suggest that you contact the link I have put below and say please, please can they help with your problem. AND please let us know how you get on

Youtube has a great intro tutorial for the machine but unfortunately that only covers built-in embroidery designs, the rest are promotional or in a foreign language. It seems like this machine is quite rare, but it was the least expensive available here. My dealer is going to a conference in denmark in less than a month and told me to write down my questions on a paper and hand it to her so she could ask the people there. I wrote down everything I have tried and what the issue is, hopefully they can fix it or straight up tell me the machine is faulty and needs to be sent to them for a fix. That page is the same I found on the Norwegian site, they haven't answered me yet but hopefully they will after the weekend. Thanks for the suggestions!

Maybe you can download the free version of Embird and get your files to the correct format then re-send. Wish I knew more I have a brother so no help here. Hugs and Welcome. Embird does not have a free version; you can download the software and get a 30 day trial period but you cannot save any design until you've bought the program and typed in the Installation code(s).

Hi there and welcome. I have a bernina bernette 340 but I really cannot add anything. I have the Bernina Artista program on my computer and I download programs from that on to a USB stick. I have a feeling that a new USB stick needs formatting but I cannot think for the life of me how I did that originally. I am sorry I cannot be of any more help. Please let us know if you work something out.

Did you ever figure out how to get your Bernette Chicago 7 to read .exp files from your USB stick? I'm having the same problem. Sure hope you or someone can help. I've seen mostly bad reviews about this machine and wished I had never bought it. The machine does pretty good with regular sewing, but is a bit fussy sometimes. I would like to know why the embroidery unit gives me errors that the design is too large when I know it's not. Help?

Hello Dears, have You ever noticed that there are two different types of exp-formats? The older one is Melco-exp, the newer one is Bernina-exp. I`m using Wilcom True Sizer to convert EMB-files and Bernina Art Link 7 for ART-files. True Sizer and Art Link 7 work very well to convert Art-files to every format you need when the design is digitized with Bernina or Wilcom Embroidery software. Besides pes und vp3 files, I allways download the art files, because they are the originals. Thank You Cuties and Sister Sides.
