Wow, what great color in your sauce. How big is your freezer? It seems to get stuffed with enough food to feed an army. Wish I had as much space for cold storage. You and John will be eating well all winter.

I didn't know one could use crab apples to make something to eat. I thought they would be very sour.

I love the colour of your crab apples and your sauce.
I had a yellow crab apple tree in the garden, gave lovely tasting sauce but the colour was nothing compared to yours.

Just look at the colour of your apple sauce. I just have to know Carolyn, where you get the time to do everything you do. I have come to the realization that in Canada you have more hours in the day than we do in South Africa. LOL. Hugs Sarah

Your foley food mill is just like my Mom use to can with and I think you would love the one I have now which I like even better. The cooked product is added to the large funnel, at the base it goes through a cone screen, the sauce when it comes out of the cone holes it then lands on a shoot taking it to an awaiting bowl that you just swap out when it gets full. The waste comes out the end of the cone into a waste bucket or compost pail. I have various sized cone shaped screens that vary how fine of a sauce you achieve. Love the color from these crab apples. Pretty soon that store room and freezer will be getting full, but I also know that if someone you know comes up with another food item they are not going to use then I bet you would find a way to use it and will enjoy the bounty all winter.

It is called a squeezo strainer they are still produced here in the US and quite a few are even currently on Ebay and a site that lists all sales new and used called Stucco . com many varieties came up on those 2 sites that show good pictures. Which will be easier than my husband setting it up and then the hard part would be learning just how to post pictures as that is something I have not been able to do yet.(I know I can hear the gasps! LOL- thankfully the pictures already online are good ones, so no need to attempt that tutorial today anyway.) I have the deluxe that has the 3 separate screens for doing everything from tomato sauce, fruits and even pumpkin. I bought mine over 25 years ago at a yard sale and could not be happier with it. No more back spinning the foley mill. As much food as you put up each year it would be a huge time saver for you. Wish you lived close and would let you use it until next July when I am hoping my body will be ready to be more active again, so you could see just how well it works. I was shocked at the New price and would recommend watching the Used sites as the old stainless like I have are virtually indestructible with only gaskets that may need replacing, but have not needed to replace any of mine all these years. The key is keeping everything together so parts do not get lost as I have even found extra parts in thrift stores that did not know what they had, so now have those extras in case I ever need them. Hope this helps. Pam

Who knew? Our neighbors is our old duplex we owned never cared who they rented their apartments to, so because of their giant crab apple tree they were forever used as weapons by the neighborhood kids. It never failed, whomever rented just was the kind that tossed their kid out early in tha am so as to better deal with their hangovers. But lol I digress, I had never experienced such an apple before. I'm going to text my kids in one of their oh boy what is mama saying today messages to say, "the cuties say crabapple sate not weapons!"

So the right tool is the strainer? The results look yummy! I expect I will be peeling some apples here pretty soon, At least with crab apples you do not have to peel them.

Yep typed that address wrong- it was stuccu . com and ebay- Thanks Patricia for posting the new site. Still can not get over just how red your sauce is- just beautiful! Would definitely brighten up bland colored meals. My Mom was one who was always saying to make sure there was a variety of colors on the plate. This would take care of that issue and taste mighty nice too. Pam

Makes me think of mom's kitchen. The spicy smell when cooking down the pulp was wonderful. I just canned plum catsup which we use in our BBQ sauce over meatballs we make starting with 3 pounds of hamburger and then freeze on cookie sheet, put in zip lock bag, dump out enough for 2 meals for the two of us. Meal ready in an hour. Love to cook but hate dirty dishes it causes.

Is that a Foley Food Mill? We never peel anything you can puree thru this wonderful device.
