I have plastic drawers. I do not recommend if you tend to overfill. Lol! I like totes of all sizes. The clear ones are more expensive. I have to worry about dust so as much is closed up as possible. I hope to put up a pegboard to hang things, just have to do some construction first. There is a group on facebook called sewing room ideas.

I have some dividers for the drawers in my sewing table for small tools. I love them. I have lots of shelving from floor to ceiling that fits a ton of fabric, baskets, etc. Don't be embarrassed to take a picture. It probably looks like most of our creative spaces.

I'm not the best organized but "I" know where my stuff is! Wanted to show you these 'clear' drawers I bought at WalMart. You may want something nicer like cabinetry, but for me, I like the clear, see through for my fabrics. I can see what I have and where, so I don't spend hours looking for one particular fabric.
I used to have things in totes, even though I labeled Fleece or towels, I couldn't actually see what COLORS I had, until I dug.
The sewing cabinet in front of drawers, SUPPOSE to go to my daughter. It was my moms old Singer with the drop in disc for different utility stitches. Even to zizag!!! See where she scraped it up with her wheelchair. I had a small ironing board on top.

I have 2 identical (only picturing one) cabinets that I store my larger pieces of fabric in. This is after the November/December CRAZY rush and before I've re-sorted and re-wound onto their boards. Please overlook it. I promise by this time next week it will be all neat again. They are the perfect thing for me. I can see in. They are protected from dust (and small children). The see through chest to right is storing some of my stabilizers and other bits and bobs. The small wooden chest has fat quarter pieces and smaller. This works well for me.

Oh my! I am so happy for you. Getting rid of the carpet is a wonderful step! I put my machines in the middle of the room in a "U" shape which leaves 4 walls to do as you wish. Good luck with your project! Kay

How wonderful for you Laura, it's great having a dedicated sewing room. I too have vinyl on the floor as it's easier to clean, but I do have a mat that Trev put down, which sometimes collects stray bits of cotton!!!!

I've added what my room looks like. I would love to have a few more cubby holes, but these will suffice. I've also got a floor to ceiling wardrobe opposite the sewing machines which has lots of fabric in it too, plus all my odds and sods for sewing. I'm lucky in that this is a big master bedroom. Good luck with everything, I"m sure you'll have it looking wonderful.

1. This is the cupboard with the cubby holes I mentioned above. On the opposite side of this wall in the second picture below I have fabric in the Horn sewing table as well. My sewing machines sit in front of the window. I use plastic baskets which are see through, but since this picture which was taken in August there is more fabric, it sort of breeds!!!!!!!!!!!! While moving everything out ,start sorting out,it could save time when moving back in.
Clear boxes with lids are definitely the way to go,they cut down on time wasted looking for certain items that you know you have but haven't used for awhile.I have about a dozen or so ,clear chocolate boxes which have been collected over the years for small items.Also boxes from the kitchen which were not being used any more.
The overflow has crept into the guest room ,especially the built in wardrobe which runs along the length of one wall.

Since you live in the U.S. you might look for a Habitat for Humanity ReStore. " Habitat for Humanity ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price." All items have been donated & the profits are used to built houses.

I got some used armoires from an online classified ad section where I live. I was able to get one for $25 and another for $20. They do not match exactly but close enough for me. I love that they are closed for dust etc. and that they right where I need them.

To store little spools of thread, I save 18 count egg cartons. Stand the 18 spools upside-down so you can read the labels - color names and numbers. Stack 2 egg cartons in a plastic shoe box. I don't use the lids. To store the super sized cones, I use the 3 drawers on wheels closet organizers. Each drawer holds 15-18, so 54 cones per stacker. I label the names on the drawer front. These stay dust-free. I put a cardboard the height of the thread and the depth of the drawer on the sunny side of the (clear) drawer so the colors won't fade.
