I got the pattern for this strange garment from a Japanese book. The first picture shows it as a skirt and the second, fastened at the bottom to create harem pants. Interesting, but I don't know how much wear it will get!

Hmmm, nice but I'm not sure how comfy the harem pants would be. I admit I would just even out the hem and be happy with a skirt.

I would wear this. Skirts are so much cooler in hot weather. You'd get the benefit of the breeze without holding on for dear life to keep it from blowing up. :)

I love long skirts. Do you think this was made for a lady who rode horses?? Although I can't for the life of me picture a Japanese woman riding a horse or even seeing a picture of one riding a horse back in the day.

Horse riding is expensive in Japan but there has to be a reason for this interesting design. Just wondering if its for bike riding? Thanks for the headscratcher Sue
Asterixsew---it could definitely be for bike riding---didn't think of that mode of transportation and that mode is vast in a lot of countries.

I am thinking it is a Skirt pattern and the fasteners are there for a very windy day.
The Japanese are very modest people and if you were on a tour if would be a nuisance holding the skirt down in the wind.
For your self I would either straighten out the hem or make a feature of it.

It is already a feature - to straighten the hem would make the shirt far too short for me to wear.

If you wore it to ride a horse or a bike you would have to hike it up above your knees. I have this crazy image in my mind. :)
