I have used felted wool for appliques on quilts and table mats and the like.
I haven't used it to do any real sewing projects like those you are considering, however. It's very nice to work with - the felting makes the wool fray-free so no extra seam allowance treatment (i.e. serging) is necessary. Hope this is some help.
