I struggled with the emotions of a sick child, since the daughter that is involved would have qualified for a wish when she was younger, but so far its been rewarding. I'm so glad to know that it isn't just for children with terminal diseases; children with life-threatening diseases also qualify. During our training, one former wish kid said that during her trip, she wasn't "the sick kid" or "the kid who has to miss school all the time" and her family wasn't "the mom and dad of that sick kid" --they just got to be a family and have memorable experiences.

Just to be clear, wish granters do not plan the actual wish. We go to the family's home and do the initial visit, and find out what the child's "one true wish" is. Then we send the paperwork in to the foundation, who does the planning. Finally, we plan the reveal party where the child finds out that his wish has been granted. So we don't do as much work as the title sounds. But to see their faces when they find out is amazing. And we've made some great contacts.
